Notes for Herbert S. KISTLER

Attended Williamson Trade School near Media, PA beginning about 1906. Played football and cricket, active in social affairs. Was expelled in July, 1908 for repeatedly being out after hours and other violations.

Address in December, 1912: 1425 Cass St., Detroit, MI

Military: Co. I, 339th Infantry. Stationed at Camp Mills, Long Island, NY in July, 1918.

10/18/29 Front page of LANCASTER NEW ERA. Article: "Local Soldier's Body Returned, Herbert S. Kistler Who Left 10 Years Ago Died in Russia." Mother Annie L. Kistler has died and father is invalid in Oreville Mennonite Home. Body taken in charge by Richard D. Kistler of Narberth. Two other brothers of Lancaster, George and Albert. Amoung 57 Americans. Body being sent to New York.

10/19/29 Letter from Polar Bear Association, Detroit, MI to Annie Lane Kistler. "We are glad to inform you that the remains of your son, who was our comrade in the United States Army in North Russia, is one of the sixty-two identified veterans whose bodies are being brought back to America with all the honors that can be accorded them by the Army and Navy, by the Government of the United States and the State of Michigan and by us, their comrades of the Polar Bear Association." Request agreement to rebury body at memorial plot near Detroit. Form supplied for that purpose is unsigned.

12/01/29 Newspaper clipping: "Kistler Buried Here With Military Honors" Body of Herbert S. Kistler died October 12, 1918, reburied Greenwood Cemetery. Enlisted in Polar Bear Division at beginning of war. Relatives Alfred G. Kistler, Lancaster; George A. Kistler, Lititz; Richard Kistler, Narberth. Veteran's father, a helpless invalid, not informed. Related article: "Kistler Grave Bared 22 More" Kistler name was on grave in Russia. Old Lutheran cemetery at Archangel.

12/01/29 Front page SUNDAY NEWS, Lancaster. "Armistice Did Not End War for �Boys' in Russia" "From a forlourn grave in north Russia where he and over two hundred comrades had been buried after skirmishes with Bolsheviki troops in September, 1918, the remains of Herbert Kistler on Saturday finally arrived in Lancaster, to be interred under his home soil with the honor due a man who fulfilled the supreme sacrifice." Gives background of battle against Bolshiviki troops at Archangel. Removal of bodies initiated by the Polar Bear Post of Detroit.
