1911 article in Johnstown, PA newspaper regarding Emeline's 80th birthday. Living with son Horace E. Kistler in Johnstown. "...The progenitor (of her family) in America was a Britisher of powerful physique who came here as a grenadier in the British army to participate in the revolution. He made the United States his permanent home. One of his sons, and father of Mrs. Kistler, was Jacob Gates, whose brother, Peter Gates was a well-known resident of Johnstown for many years." "George Gates moved from Huntingdon county to Hopewell township (Bedford) about 1799. He was the father of eleven children: John, Jacob, Joseph, George, Thomas, Henry, Martin, Peter, William, Margaret and David. Joseph, the third son, was born in Huntingdon county in 1798. He married, first, Margaret, daughter of Jacob Chamberlain, an early settler of Hopewell township. For his second wife he married Harriet Ross. By his first wife he had twelve children. One of the sons, John, now an old resident, lives at Jacks Corners. Joseph Gates second wife bore five sons, two of whom, Alexander M. and Gephart W. are living. Alexander M.
