Military: Served as Private in Co. I, 55th Regiment, Pennsylvani Volunteer Infantry. Later transferred to Co. E, 24th Regiment. Enlisted June 15, 1864, at Huntingdon, PA. Physical description: Age 18 years, Roller, eyes & hair black, complexion dark, height 5 feet 6 inches.

Military medical record: "March 26, to Apr. 2, 1864 Primary syphilis, ret'd to duty...Apr. 7 & 7, 1864, Gonorrhoea, ret'd to duty,...Apr. 23 to 29, 1864, ulcers, ret'd to duty...June 4, 1864 to -- G.S.W. arm...Examined by med'l examining Board Feb. 12, 1865, diagnosis, G.S.W. left forearm,...transf'd to 24 Regt VRC, Feb. 13, 1865" Source: Military pension records of William B. Letter dated 12/13/04 from Horace E. Kislter to Sydney L. Kistler re. Wm.B. Gates: Grandfather Gates served in Penna. Dragoons. His (WmB's) brother served in 13th Ohio Vols. "Wm.B. Gates enlisted 2/15/1864 at Huntingdon, Pa. in Co. I, 55th Pa.Vet. Vols. After being discharged from Hospital at Chester, Delaware Co., Pa. was sent to Washington, D.C. 'My examination being total disability from actual service. I was transferred to Co. E 24 Regt. Vet. Reserve Corps 1st Batallion on detached Service in the District of Columbia." After the War, he lived on Main Street in Duncansville, Blair Co., PA. until April 1, 1867 when he moved to Harrisburg, PA Later moved to Allegheny City, PA

"...William B. Gates was injured at the Clairton Steel Works at Clairton, Allegheny Co., PA on November 26, 1907, and died December 3rd 1907, at the Hospital McKeesport, Pa., and I buried William B. Gates on Friday December 6th 1907 in the South Side Pittsburgh, Pa Cemetery...William B. Gates and Martha E.
