Notes for Mary Kitz BOWERS
July 11, 1890 article in Johnstown newspaper (...Tribune) entitled "An Old-Time Iron Forge". Quotes earlier article of June, 1890: "Mrs. Mary Gates, widow of Jacob Gates, who was at one time a resident of this place and an employee in Levergood's forge about 1819, is the guest of Dr. H.E. Kistler. Mrs. Gates is eighty-seven years of age. She is the Doctor's grandmother. This is her first visit since she left here in 1820. Most of the time since leaving she has lived in Hollidaysburg, but at present she resides in Altoona. She has seven sons and five daughters, all of whom have families. They are scattered throughout the West. Mrs. Gates is a pensioner of the War of 1812, her husband having been a soldier in that struggle." "The forge was located at about where the school-house stands in Millville. It was to the north of the junction of the two rivers and was run by water from the Conemaugh and was the only forge in the place." Copy in personal collection of Bruce Kistler, Winter Haven, FL
