Notes for Johan George KISTLER
Source of information below: Carolyn K. Buttolph, Fairfax, VA, KISTLER FAMILIES OF NORTH CAROLINA (unpublished). Letters in brackets ( ) indicate Buttolph's reference code for the individual.
Birth records for George (BA) have not been located, but cemetery records for the George Kestler Cemetery near Lincolnton, NC show George, died 5/7/1821, age 70. Thus, a birth date of 1751 can be deduced.
George is probably the oldest of his father's sons. He is the only child referred to by name in his father's will: " my son John George Kistler shall not inherit more than one share of my estate even as my other children and if he is not willing to stay with my wife Anna Barbara on these terms, he may go where he pleases." The implication of this statement is that George may have been contemplating a move to North Carolina and the father was not very pleased about it. He is also the first of five sons listed in his mother's will which appear to be listed in birth order.
George married Eva Rosina Ritter sometime before 1775. Berks Co., PA records (deed book 8, pages 424-426) describe Eva Rosina as the dau. of Henry Rutter/Ritter and as the sister to Anna Elizabeth who married Sebastian Faust. George and Eva Rosina had several children while still in Pennsylvania.
Henry (BAA) was born 12/16/1775 and was baptized at the Rosenthal church. Henry's parents are shown as George and Eva Rosina, godparents William Kistler and Juliana Ritter. Elizabeth (BAB) was born 6/3/1777 and also was baptized at the Rosenthal church, parents shown as George and Eva Rosina, godparents Sebastian Faust and wife (Eva Rosina's sister married a Sebastian Faust). Mary Barbara (BAC), known as Barbara, was born 4/13/1779 and baptized at the Jerusalem church, daughter of George Kistler and wife, godparent Barbara Ritter (grandmother of the child).
Sometime in the 1780's, George moved to North Carolina. His first wife probably died about 1790 after bearing several more children. George then remarried. The North Carolina Genealogical Society, Volume 2, 1976, contains the account book of Pastor Storch who served in Rowan Co., NC. On December 27, 1791 he records the marriage of George Kistler and Susanna Kuhnen. Another source, Our Heritage by June Boyer (OHJB), incorrectly describes Susanna as the daughter of Aaron Goser.
On February 12, 1793 George bought 400 acres on both sides of Potter Creek in Lincoln Co. near Lincolnton, not very far from Rowan Co. Land records in Lincoln Co. describe George as being from Rowan Co.
On November 15, 1813 he purchased 550 acres on Indian Creek in Lincoln Co., NC where he moved his family and built the Kistler home. He paid $1,055 dollars cash for this land.
In the Kestler Cemetery near Lincolnton, Susanna is buried with George, she died 2/28/1839, age 69 (thus born ca, 1770). Her will was filed for probate in March, 1839 and mentions her daughter Eva Rosanah (wife of Trusvane Reyfield), daughter Sally (wife of Samuel Speicht), and son Daniel.
Extensive records exist at the North Carolina State Archives in Raleigh which show the heirs of George. A few years before his death, George borrowed several hundred dollars from his son Jacob. Jacob had to sue the estate to recover this money. All the heirs are named in the legal papers which support the suit. These papers show the heirs as follows (birth dates are shown here only as an aid to identification; the legal papers do not contain these):
Henry BAA born 12/16/1775
Elizabeth BAB born 06/03/1777 (Anne Elizabeth, wife of Philip Leonard)
Barbara BAC born 04/13/1779 (Barbara or Maria Barbara, wife of Jacob Kistler)
Paul BAD born about 1782
Jacob BAE born about 1784
John BAG born about 1786
Susanna BAH born about 1793 (Susanna Catherine, wife of John Lenhardt)
Daniel BAI born about 1801
George BAJ born about 1798
Peter BAK born 01/01/1800
Philip BAL born about 1803
Abraham BAN born about 1805
Eva BAO born about 1810
Sarah (Sally) BAP born about 1810
In all cases, the family name is spelled as "Keistler". Particular attention should be drawn to George's daughter Barbara who married Jacob "Keistler". Obviously, Barbara had not married her brother Jacob (who was suing the estate). It is probable that Barbara married her cousin, Jacob, (BCB).
An article in the HERITAGE OF CATAWBA COUNTY as well as a chapter in OUR HERITAGE, both authored by June Boyer, provide valuable information, however, some of the information is inaccurate or erroneous.
