Notes for Emeline GATES

1911 article in Johnstown, PA newspaper regarding Emeline's 80th birthday. Living with son Horace E. Kistler in Johnstown. "...Emmeline Gates, daughter of Jacob and Mary Bauer Gates, was born in Bedford, county May 1, 1831. ...one (sibling) survives--Mrs. Elizabeth Gates Shade of Edgewood, Ill. Her parents resided in Johnstown from 1819 to 1821 when Mr. Gates was employed at the forge, the family removing to Duncansville, which in what is now Blair county. Emmeline Gates was united in marriage to the late William Kistler of Perry county. The ceremony was performed at Rebecca (sic) Furnace, Blair county. They later made their home in Blain, Blair county (sic) from which place her son, Dr. Horace E. Kistler, came here years ago to practice medicine. William Kistler served in the Seventh regiment of Pennsylvania reserve corps, as fife major. His oldest son, William B. Kistler, also enlisted at the age of 15. He served two enlistments in the calvary during the civil war further evidencing the family's martial tendency. There were 12 children in the family of which the local physician is a member. Death: Application for Reimbursement from accrued pension for expenses paid in the last sickness and burial of Emeline Kistler, filed by son Elmer Kistler of Philadelphia. Confirms January 4, 1915 as date of death. Sickness began December 20, 1914. She was being attended to by daughter Laura Weldon at 2158 N. 5th St., Phila. Was buried in Knights of Pythias Cemetery, Phila. Elmer's address was 6039 Race St., Phila. Source: Military pension records of William B. Kistler, National Archives.

04/15/77 Deed Knights of Pythias Greenwood Cemetery Co. of Phila to William B. Kistler, Section J (?) Div. 1 Lot 232. Note on back of deed (stamp barely legible): "Mrs. Kestler buried in the witgin (?) lot on 1/7/15" signed by undertaker and superintendent. In personal collection of Bruce Kistler, Winter Haven, FL
