Little Wishes

I wish that, just once,
I would have known the wonder
   of waking to the stirring
of a new life in me...
that, just once,
a loving man had held me
his warm hands on my belly
heart filled with awe and tenderness
at the little one within me -
         part of both of us.

I wish that, just once,
I could have known the wisdom
   shared eternally; universaly
    among those called Mother -
    worn, torn, and useful
      aged yet ageless -
that, just once,
the fear of delivering that new person
into this world so strange and complex
   would have been conquered by
    that first loud wailing:
     my Child, greeting me...
