Darien McAllister, the man who had hurt her best friend so much in the past, was the captain of "The Shining Star". "Oh, Serena...," she said sympathetically, "It'll be alright...don't worry about it. Hey, tell ya what. Tonight is karaoke night. We can go, and you can totally forget about him. You love karaoke! What'd ya say?" Serena's lip quivered for a moment, and then she squeezed her eyes shut. "Good idea Katie," Serena said, "I get first shower!" With that they both rushed to the room. Serena rushed into the bathroom and into the shower. She enjoyed extremely hot water for a moment, then turned the knob so Katie would also have a warm shower. Serena was determined to have a good time tonight, and Darien McAllister couldn't change that. She wasn't going to let him. **************************** Serena stepped into the room wearing one of the complimentary bathrobes offered by the cruise line. "Shower's all yours, Katie," she said. Katie dashed into the bathroom with a pile of brushes, combs, shampoos, and conditioners in her hands. Serena laughed out loud when she heard her dump everything on the floor. She spread her suitcase out on the bed and picked out a blue and white sundress with white sandals. She did her hair in her usual style, two buns atop her head with long strands of hair flowing from each. Serena glanced out the window. The sun was setting in the sky, and she wanted to watch it from the bow of the ship to get a better view. After scribbling a note to Katie, she picked up a small blue notebook and pen and headed out the door. There weren't too many people on the bow, only an older couple, two children, and a crewman with blonde hair and green eyes sweeping the deck. Serena walked to the very tip of the ship and looked over the rail at the ship slicing through the water. She sat down right there, and opened her notebook. Ever since she was thirteen, she would look at something, whether it was a person, a house, or something as simple as a tree, and describe it in her notebook, hoping to use the description in a book that she would someday write. She began to describe the sunset: "The blazing hues of orange, red and icy blue eyes captivate one's soul...". Serena read over her description and frowned. "Stop it Serena," she whispered to herself. "Stop thinking about him." But she just couldn't, no matter how hard she tried.... *Flashback* Serena and Darien descended the stairs arm-in-arm, and made their wall to the ballroom. When they walked into the ballroom, one of Serena's friends waved to her. "Hey, Darien, I'll be right back, ok?," said Serena. Darien nodded. Once Serena was with her friends, they bombarded her with questions like "Serena, who is that hot guy who just escorted you in here?" and "Serena, you lucky! He's gorgeous! Just look at those eyes! Mmmm, it's enough to make me just melt!" Serena giggled. "His name's Darien McAllister, and he's very sweet. He's gonna be staying here for a week while his parents do business with mine." One of the girls, a tall girl named Elizabeth gasped. "Staying here? For a week? Man, Serena, you've got it good." All the others nodded in agreement. The beginning notes of a slow song started to play. "Well, I don't know if-," Serena began, but was cut off, because someone had come up from behind and grabbed her waist, sweeping her out on to the dance floor. When she looked, her breath caught in her throat as she saw Darien's handsome face. "Oh..wow..umm..I mean..Thank you," she managed to muster. He chuckled. "You're welcome. And sorry if I surprised you." Serena blushed. "No, that's ok....really....I...um..er" "So you want to be a writer, huh?," asked Darien, trying to make conversation. "Umm...yeah. It's great how when you write anything can happen. You can make toasters talk and people fly. I love it, but my parents don't share my passion for it. They think I should just sit around and mindlessly talk to other people about parties and wine and the weather. They say it's unladylike to just talk about what you want to talk about, so you see, they're also sexist. Because, according to them, men can talk about whatever they want, but women have to stick to 'polite' topics. Which I obviously wouldn't be doing as a writer. Sorry..I'm getting a little carried away, but it just frustrates me!" "That's ok, I love hearing you talk," Darien said softly. "And that's what makes you *you*. Because in the one night that I've known you, it's not your beauty that practically has me drooling, ok-it's not only your beauty, but the words that come out of your mouth. There's just something when you speak...I don't know how to describe it, but I think I'm falling in love with it." Serena turned a bright red. "I know how you feel." Darien pulled her closer. There they danced, and no words were spoken again. They both knew that they were falling in love. Over the next few days, while the McAllisters stayed at the Lands' estate, Darien and Serena talked, swam, rode horses, and had picnics in the rose garden. One day when they were having a picnic around sunset. At one point Darien got up and walked to the wooden arch that was the entrance to the garden. The view of the sunset was perfect. "Hey Serena, come here a second," Darien called. She got up and walked under the arch with him. "Look at the sun." "Wow...it's beautiful," Serena breathed. Darien looked into her eyes. There was something about those eyes to Serena. It seemed like they could peer into her very soul. "I'm looking at something even more beautiful," he whispered. Serena shivered in delight as he pulled her closer to him and softly placed his lips on hers. The feeling the two felt was powerful, almost indescribable. Neither of them wanted the moment to end. Suddenly, they heard shouting coming from the direction of the house. They pulled their lips away from each other and, still in each others arms, looked towards the house.... *End Chapter Three* Wheeeeee! I've been working on this chapter forever! It's finally done!
