| Dr. Howard Gardner's Multiple Intelligences |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||
| In 1983, a Harvard University professor of education developed the theory of multiple intelligences. Dr. Howard Gardner's ideas have since been developed by Dr. Thomas Armstrong, whose website provides extensive information on this revolutionary theory. Gardner first developed the theory as an answer to the traditional I.Q. test, famously limited in its judgment of intelligence. These specialized intelligences may look familiar to those who have recently taken an I.Q. test, as they are now frequently used in testing. |

| The eight intelligences are as follows: | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Linguistic intelligence ("word-smart") Logical-mathematical intelligence ("number/reasoning smart") Spatial intelligence ("picture smart") Bodily-kinesthetic intelligence ("body smart") Musical intelligence ("music smart") Interpersonal intelligence ("people smart") Intrapersonal intelligence ("self smart") Naturalist intelligence ("nature smart") |

| Most people contain at least a touch of all eight intelligences, although different ones are prominent from person to person. By the time we reach high school and college, we have a pretty good idea of our own make-up, but stop right now and think for a few minutes. Are you more interpersonal or intrapersonal? More logical or linguistic? More "body smart" or "nature smart"? Or, are you mostly well balanced between the intelligences? | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
| How does this relate to tutoring? | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
| According to Dr. Armstrong, "Many adults find themselves in jobs that do not make optimal use of their most highly developed intelligences (for example, the highly bodily-kinesthetic individual who is stuck in a linguistic or logical desk-job when he or she would be much happier in a job where they could move around, such as a recreational leader, a forest ranger, or [a] physical therapist)." The same goes for the classroom setting. As discussed earlier with the four main learning styles, college teachers still insist on using the auditory technique (which, admittedly, is most convenient for the teacher), even when most students are visual learners. By examining our intelligence make-up, we can learn how to best help ourselves inside and outside the classroom. Take this online quiz to find where you place, and refer your tutees to it as well!
