Dear Parents

The term seems determined to continue at the same hectic pace that it began. We are still receiving enquiries about admissions and I am pleased to report that school numbers are already at an all time high. This does give us some problems to solve for next year but they are problems that we are happy to have! Plans for 2005/6 are already on the table and, together with the building programme, we are looking forward to a busy and exciting year.

Swimming Championships

As I write this, a team of 9 students from KIS will be gathering to compete in the Kota Kinabalu Swimming Association Championships. The events cover the whole weekend, from 8am to 12 noon and from 2pm until 5pm. Any parents or students wishing to encourage the KIS team will be more than welcome.

Year 5/6 Family Assembly

Year 5/6 will be hosting a family assembly next Friday, 4 February, at 1.30 in the Foundation Stage classrooms. All parents are welcome to attend this – not just those with children in Year 5/6. Family assemblies are a good opportunity to see what other classes are doing and to get a feeling for the work of the whole primary department.

Year 5/6 Trip to Rasa Ria

The Rasa Ria trip was provisionally scheduled to take place this week but this proved impossible. Instead it will take place on Wednesday, 16 February. Further details will be provided nearer the time. The focus of the trip is a number of environmental and conservation issues.

Year 11 Parent-teacher Conferences

Parent-teacher conferences will be held on Monday, 31st January, from 3:15 to 5:00. The meetings are for the parents of Year 11 students only. The purpose of the meetings is to finalise (I)GCSE examination entries for May/June and to discuss students’ performance in the mock examinations.

The Cricket Club and the Karaoke Club will go ahead as usual but will finish at 4:00. Monday evening futsol will start at the later time of 5:00.

Healthy Eating Week

Next week is Healthy Eating Week and we would like as many parents as possible to support us in our efforts to persuade our young people to eat healthily and sensibly. If “we are what we eat” then some of our students are well on the way to looking like burgers, chips and fried chicken! It would be wonderful to see no junk food at all in school next week, so please bear in mind our efforts when preparing your children’s snacks and packed lunches.

To get us all in the mood, Mr Leak has kindly devised a Healthy Eating Quiz. Re-arrange the first letters of the answers to the following food related questions to spell a well known northern English health food.

1)  Town where bitters come from (bitters is a cocktail condiment).
2)  This fish gets a raw deal in Japan .
3)  A spicy relish reputed to aid digestion.
4)  North sea staple fish, rich in omega three oils.
5)  People in the Southern states of the U.S.A. used to eat this unconventional food to restore their health.
6)  Ancient large fish known primarily for its delicious eggs, which if caught in the U.K. is the property of the reigning monarch.
7)  Blini, a Central European peasant staple, is a type of what?
8)  Iran and Kefir are Western Asian variations of this dairy product.
9) This fruit is a Jamaican tangerine, grapefruit cross.
First person to provide the right solution (all answers must be correct) will receive a prize.

Finally, “It’s a sporting life …”

High Drama at Padang B

Hot and sultry conditions saw the KIS squad take the field last Friday in the shadow of the Likas stadium. A hurriedly assembled eleven faced SMK Likas in the first game of the post Christmas calendar.

As the lean and hungry Likas players traversed the turf, it was clear that many K.I.S. players had indulged in a little too much Christmas pudding. The Likas boys were soon leading by four goals. It looked as if we were in for a real roasting.

A half time discussion saw a technical switch, with guest player Jonson Hew setting up between the posts, which allowed Show to marshall the defence. Immediately, this had a positive effect. Sunil Parmar slipped into defensive midfield which gave Eric Doi the chance to be more creative, which I am sure is his natural game. A close opening to the second half was capped with a superb 30 yard screamer from the howitzer that is Doi’s right boot. Likas scored in reply and the game settled down in rhythm.

The second goal came when Marsh harried and chased a defensive slip and scored a real striker’s goal. Doubts arise as to whether his claims of calf cramps were genuine or perhaps a mechanism to get the sympathy of the female supporters.

The final score was 6-2. A great second half performance showed true mettle and grit. Special mention must go to J.J. Hamilton who played a fine game for one of such tender years and secondly Yasuaki Ujihara who literally ran himself to a standstill. One more point of note was the own goal conceded by Ronaldinho Curtis, who certainly made an impact when taking the field.

Re-match: Friday 4th at 5.00 pm. Location to be confirmed.
