Dear Parents

I realised with something of a shock yesterday that when this week ends, we will be almost a quarter of the way through this term! I have to say that a lot seems to have happened already but there is an awful lot more still to be done …

Children’s Homes
Our intention to link up with a children’s home moved a step closer to becoming a reality yesterday when Lily Walker and Jenny Spice set off to Bundu Tuhan to look at the home there. We feel that we, as a school, can make a useful contribution to improving the quality of the lives of the children who live in such places. Although they are often well cared for by dedicated staff, they have none of the little luxuries that our children take for granted. A relationship such as the one we hope to establish cuts both ways and I am sure that our children will also benefit greatly from their contact with those who have had a more difficult start in life. However, before we make a final decision about which children’s home to support, we hope to look at another home we have heard about. When we have finally established links, we hope to organise a visit by more members of the school, donate the goods we collected last term and then possibly plan a social and/or sporting visit.

Foundation Open Morning
The Foundation classes were open to visitors last Saturday morning and I have to say that they looked very good – bright, colourful, stimulating and welcoming. The children who visited us that morning needed no encouragement to settle in and enjoy the play and learning facilities. We are looking to expand this section of the school and, as it is the one area of the school that is currently open to all Malaysian parents, would ask all our parents to promote it to friends and family that have children aged between two and a half and six. We really are offering the best foundation for children’s early learning.

Dora Richard
We were sorry to learn recently that Dora Richard, the Year 1/2 classroom assistant, will be leaving us at the end of the month. We were happy to hear, however, that she is leaving us simply to be closer to her future husband. She has been at the school for 2½ years and we wish her well in her new life. We are holding interviews for her replacement today.
Golf Presentation
We are hoping to introduce golf to our primary students and have established links with the Likas driving range. Andrew Myers will be giving a short presentation to parents on Tuesday, 28 September at 8.00 am in the library. As a school, we are hoping to foster and develop links with outside agencies as it is just not possible to run everything ourselves. So, do come along and find out what Andrew is offering.

Red House Book Club
This term we will be holding a Primary Book Week and as part of our focus on books we shall be offering parents and children the opportunity to order high-quality books from The Red House Book Club. Details will follow shortly.

Parachute Club
This daunting sounding club is in fact a very earth-bound and enjoyable activity. Ms Fox has now extended entry to any child in Key Stage 2 who would like to join. Please sign up in the office.

Swimming
As outlined in the letter to primary parents, swimming next week will be for Foundation 2 and Year 1 only; Years 2, 3, 4, 5 & 6 will have a taster of golf at the Likas Driving Range.

Trip to Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park
Next Thursday, 30th September, all of our secondary students will be making an educational visit to Pulau Gaya and Pulau Manukan.  The trip includes a jungle walk, a BBQ lunch on the beach and snorkeling around coral reefs. It promises to be instructive and enjoyable. Please return the permission slip along with payment (RM 70) to the school office on Monday, if you have not already done so.

FOBISSEA Secondary Games
Earlier in the week secondary parents received a letter giving details about the FOBISSEA Games to be held in KL in December. If we are to send a team, it is essential that we book flights next week to take advantage of special offers from the airlines. The permission form should be returned with the required deposit by Monday, 27th September. Thank you.

House Points
There has been a strong start to the term from all three Houses, resulting in all three being separated by only one point. The scores are: Sapi 171, Sulug  171 and Gaya 170.

Football Tournament
Having reached the half way stage of the K.I.S. Champions League, the Beach Bums have proven to be the early pace setters. An unorthodox blend of defence and mindless violence has seen them decimate the opposition, with each opposing team being left with at least one player on the sick bench. Mr Leak, after being given a free flying lesson by Mary Walker, was heard to liken the experience to bungee jumping off Victoria Falls, only much more terrifying. Another player to catch the eye of this correspondent is K.K. taliban librero Alex Woi, whose instincts to roam are not hindered by the rules and regulations of the beautiful game. We look forward to some exciting fixtures next week. Special mention must go to Old Jelly and the Egg Laying Cows who have impressed with their sportsmanship, playing at all times within the spirit of the game.

Football Match Tonight!!
Tonight the school has a match against Cikgu Mutang’s church. The match is at Likas Stadium, padang C, and will commence at 5 pm. Let us hope that we can make a winning start to the sporting year.

Best wishes,
