Volume No: 2004-05/01

Date: 10 September 2004

Dear Parents
A warm welcome back to KIS at the beginning of the 2004/5 school year. It has been a real pleasure to see all of our students again and to welcome new ones into the school community. Term has started smoothly but, as always, it is good to get to the end of the first week and know that everything is functioning correctly. I am pleased to report that it is!

Ms Fox
In addition to our new students, I am delighted to welcome Ms Fox to the school as the teacher of the Foundation 2 class. Ms Fox has been teaching in England and the Seychelles and we hope that her stay here will be an enjoyable one.

Primary Topic Talks
Topic talks will, as usual, take place next week, the second week of term. Years 1/2 and 3/4 will take place on Tuesday 14 September and Year 5/6 will take place on Wednesday 15 September. These are invaluable opportunities for you to find out what your child will be studying this term and ways in which you may be able to help them. Please try to attend – particularly if you have never been to a topic talk before. There is always a first time!

Swimming
The first primary swimming session of this academic year will take place for Foundation 2 and Year 1/2 on Wednesday 15 September. Further details have already been circulated to parents on the letter that went out at the beginning of the week.

Foundation Open Day
We will be holding an Open Day for the Foundation years (approx 3 – 5 year olds) on Saturday 18 September at 9.00 am. This is being advertised in the press and we hope to have a good response. Please encourage any friends and relations with children of this age to come along and learn about the excellent programme we have to offer.

Clubs – and a correction to Football Club!
All clubs will start next week - and apologies for a mistake that appeared on the Clubs letter. The Friday soccer session from 2.00 – 3.00 is for Years 7 – 11 and NOT for Years 4 – 11. Primary soccer players have their own club on Wednesdays.

Pupil Absence
Can I please remind all parents that we like to be kept fully informed of the reasons for pupil absence. If your child is away from school, please phone the school office and leave a message for the class or form teacher. When the child returns to school, please send a note for our records.

Food Stall!
Year 11 Business Studies students will be running a food stall from September 17 – 24, to give them hands-on experience of how to run a small business. They will be selling a variety of food at a stall situated near the entrance to the secondary building. Please ensure that your children have a little spending money so that our entrepreneurs can monitor a real cash flow!

School closure
School will be closed next week on Thursday, 16 September for the Birthday of TYT Yang Di-Pertua Negeri.

Collection of Students After School
Can I ask all parents, please, to collect their children promptly at the end of the school day. Teachers and classroom assistants have meetings and a lot of work to do after the children’s day finishes and it is simply not possible for us to operate a full programme of supervision. Please do your very best to arrive promptly at 2.00 or, if your child has a club, at 3.00. Thank you.

From the PTA:
The PTA would like to welcome everyone back to school. Our warmest greetings go to all the new families who have joined us this new school year.  Selamat datang ke KIS & KK.

PTA Meeting & Newcomer's Coffee Morning
Our first PTA meeting will be combined with the Newcomer's Coffee Morning. This will be held on Monday, 13th September 2004 at 8:30 am at the Sutera Marina Club's Coffee Shop. We look forward to meeting you all, especially our new members.

Class Representatives
We would like to encourage each class group to organise a coffee morning/meeting as soon as possible to choose their class representatives.
A Class Representative is a volunteer Mum or Dad who liaises between the class teacher and parents. Different teachers will request different levels of support.

Generally the Class Representative:

  • Is the first point of contact when the class teacher requires assistance for reading, school trips, class parties, school productions, etc.
  • Creates a class directory/contact information sheet which is distributed to all parents of the class group
  • Co-ordinates parent volunteers for any event
  • Recruits parent help for other school and PTA events
  • Greets any new parents whose children join the class during the academic year
  • Organises informal social opportunities for parents each term.

Best wishes,
