Dear Parents

After our newsletter went to press last week, the playground filled with children dressed up to look like characters from some of their favourite books. We had fairies and mermaids, vampires and wizards, Ali Baba and Huckleberry Finn …  a veritable library of characters! All of them paraded around the playground before lunch and prizes, kindly donated by the PTA, were awarded for the best costumes. What a nice end to a very successful Book Week! Our thanks to all involved.
The Demon Headmistress
Talking of people in costumes, we still have a few copies available of the VCD of our production of The Demon Headmistress. It is on two discs and they are a bargain at RM10 for both discs.

Shoes for the Children’s Home
I would like to thank all parents who responded to our request for shoes that we can take to the children’s home. It is still not too late to pass on to us any suitable shoes in good condition.

Japanese School
Some of our primary students will have spent today at the Japanese School . An interesting programme of activities was lined up for them and I am sure both sets of children will have benefited from the experience.

FOBISSEA Games Meeting
There will be a meeting at 7.00 pm on Monday next week, 18 October, for the parents of students representing the school at the FOBISSEA Games. Participating students are welcome to attend.

Secondary Swimming
As the term has gone on, more and more students are not swimming on Friday mornings. Whilst we are sympathetic to those children who have genuine ailments, we would ask that parents only write a “sick note” if their child is genuinely ill. As this term ends with our Swimming Gala, in which all students are expected to participate, lack of regular swimming practice might result in embarrassment. From this week onwards, students who do not swim on Friday morning will not be allowed to take part in any further sporting activities that day, including after-school clubs.

AGM
The school’s AGM is scheduled to take place on 3 November at 8.00 pm. Information is posted on the Board of Management’s noticeboard at the entrance to the school and further information, including nomination forms, is available from the school office.

Meeting for Parents of Year 11 Students
At 7.00pm next Wednesday, 20th October, there will be a meeting in the library for parents of students in Year 11. The purpose of the meeting is to provide more information about the GCSE/IGCSE courses and what to expect for the rest of this academic year, as well as to suggest ways in which parents can help their children gain the best possible grades. Naturally, our Year 11 students are most welcome at the meeting.

Early School Closure: Advance Notice
On Monday and Tuesday, 1 and 2 November, an educational consultant will be in school to conduct some in-service training with staff. To make the most of his visit, we need to have two longer sessions with the whole staff. The Board have therefore agreed that school can close at 1.00 pm on these days. I will remind you again nearer the time, but please make a note in your diaries that children will need to be collected early and promptly.

Last Call for Golf…
If any children from Years 2 – 6 are interested in Golf as an after school club, please return the completed Registration Form. If you did not receive one of these and would like one, or need more information, please see Mrs Wickham.

Fathers and Daughters vs the Hard Men : Football Match

Our regular football correspondent is incapacitated today and is unable to write his normal, impartial view of last night’s match on the Archery Field. He promises me a full match report next week. Sadly, his efforts on the football field have resulted in back pain that has all but grounded this stalwart of the mid-field. By all accounts it was a fine match, which I missed because of the rain, with the Hard Men coming out winners by 4-0 in the first game and 2-1 in the second. No doubt we shall get a blow-by-blow account next week. Meanwhile, the staffroom is awash with rumours that our normal correspondent may be the victim of his advancing age, whilst the man himself is inexplicably blaming JJ Hamilton, a boy a fraction of his size (and age). Nonetheless, despite the dubious ethics of the case, we wish a swift recovery to our colossus of the pen (and, on occasions, the mid-field).

Have a good weekend,
