Dear Parents

As I write this our secondary students are coming through the gates with that sunburned and slightly exhausted look of a group of students who had an enjoyable time, and a worthwhile educational visit, on their island outing yesterday. It sounds to have been an unqualified success and I am delighted that we are getting our students out and about and challenging them in different ways. One of the hallmarks of a good education, in my view, is the all round development of the individual. Never let it be said that we are not trying!

Farewell to Mark and Norie Heywood
We bid a sad official farewell to Mark and Norie Heywood this week as they prepare to leave for Hong Kong. Both have given generously of their time and energies to the school, Mark as Chair of the Board of Management and Norie as Secretary to the PTA. Their contributions will be missed and we wish them every success and happiness in their new posting.

Book Week
I am excited that next week is Book Week. Parents of primary children will have received by now a detailed account of what is happening on each day and throughout the week. There are lots of activities, from dressing up as book characters to a bedtime story session, from a book stall to a book exchange and raffle. Book Week is an excellent way to focus attention on reading and enjoying books – the start of a lifelong addiction for many of us!

Year 1/2 Classroom Assistant
We said a sad farewell to Dora Richard yesterday and wished her well in her new life on Labuan. We are, however, delighted to welcome Lisa Ambrose as the new Year 1/2 classroom assistant and hope that she will enjoy working as an important part of our primary team.

News from the PTA
Those of you who have visited the library recently will be aware of the transformation that has taken place there. The PTA contributed RM6000 to the refurbishment project and it seems to me money very well spent. Thank you from all of us.

The next PTA meeting will be held at 8.30 on Monday, 4 October in the library – where else?!
Children’s Home Visit
I wrote last week about the visit that Lily Walker and Jenny Spice made to a children’s home. Last Sunday, a group of us went to see another home in Tambunan. We have talked provisionally about setting up a couple of support programmes and now need to work out the administrative details. More news will follow shortly.

Futsal
I know that many of our children enjoyed Futsal when the opportunity first arose. I pass on, then, the information that Futsal is back on Saturdays and/or Sundays from 10.00 – 12.00. All ages from 6 to 19 are welcome.

Thank you …
Mark and Norie Heywood for the donation of a large number of books that will shortly make their way into the library and to Sarah Lim for a collection of art magazines that is now in the art room.
Secondary Golf
After the success of the primary “taster” session, secondary students will have an opportunity to experience the golf driving range next Friday, 8 October, in place of their normal swimming session. Students should bring their PE kit.

Cross Stitch Club
Cross Stitch Club has to be cancelled next week, ie Wednesday 3 November, 2.00 – 3.00, as Mrs Anuar Ghani will be visiting another school to look at their provision and resourcing for children for whom English is not their first language.

Finally, I hand you over again to our special correspondent to report on the Football match against S.I.B. church last Friday:
“A fine sea mist created an unusual atmosphere at padang B, bringing back memories of wet weekends in Scunthorpe. It seemed to help both teams as they served up an entertaining contest which ended with honours even at 5 - 5. The opposition was provided by Cigku Mutang’s church, traditionally a Sabah footballing powerhouse. Their cause was aided by the inclusion of Cigku Mutang himself and defensive hard man Leak. After a strong start, K.I.S. conceded an early goal due to a defensive misunderstanding. However, quality will inevitably come to the fore, this time in the menacing form of Mr Hamilton who grabbed a brace of goals with two devastating examples of the goal scorer’s art. Marco Marsh managed to increase the gap with a fine solo effort just before the interval.

Sometimes the football fan can be justified in questioning the tactics which coaches employ, and this was certainly the case in the second half when former pupil Wickham, left the centre of defence for a stint between the sticks. Quickly S.I.B. were level. Stability was restored when Leak took over the goalkeeping mantle. Goals were exchanged, leading to a tense last five minutes. The final whistle seemed as though it would never sound, but the K.I.S boys held on to earn a deserved draw. In the last throws of the game, K.I.S nearly snatched the win with a full length run by Mr Wickham. The opposition did not know where he was going, his own team was equally nonplussed, and, truth be known, he also had little idea of his destination. Special mention must go to prominent local marine biologist Mr Pilcher who, whilst being a world expert on sea mammals, models his game more on the four hoofed variety found charging across the plains of Africa. A great start to the sporting year, we hope to have many more fixtures as the term progresses.”

And on that very positive note, I shall wish you a good weekend,
