Volume No: 2003-04/27

Date: 30 April 2004

Dear Parents
The change in holiday dates and the postponement of Sports Day have already had an impact on our schedules for the term so please bear with me while I run through some alterations to our original dates. These were events beyond our control so … what else to do?

Primary Parents Evenings
As mentioned in last week’s newsletter, these will take place next week, starting at 2.30, on the following days:

Wednesday 5 May    Reception and Year 1/2
Thursday     6 May    Year 3/4 and Year 5/6

More details are attached in a separate letter.

Topic Talks
I would like to thank all parents who attended the primary topic talks this week. They are an excellent way of learning about your child’s curriculum and how you can best assist in your children’s learning. If you missed this term’s talk, please determine to attend the next one.

ELC/Reception Meeting
My thanks also to the many parents who attended this meeting last Tuesday. It was a good opportunity for the Head of Primary to explain the Foundation Stage curriculum and to stress that in the English system there is a definite and well-documented structure underlying classroom practice.

Communication with Parents
Topic talks, parents’ evenings, curriculum meetings … I hope that all of the above confirm that we are serious as a school in wanting to improve the flow of information to parents and to make you feel more involved in the teaching and learning that is going on at KIS. We are always ready to listen and to explain and the school has long had an “open door” policy. That is not the same as saying that we can, or should, always do everything we are asked to do but we do take notice of the feedback we receive. To adapt a well-worn saying, “It may not be possible to please all of the people all of the time - but we would like to please most of the people most of the time!”

Trustees
The Chair of the Board of Management, Mark Heywood, Board member Andrew Walker and I met this week with two of the school’s Trustees, Tan Sri Thomas Jayasuriya and Datuk Stanley Yee.  It was an informal meeting and provided an excellent opportunity for us to re-establish contact and inform them of developments at the school.
Mangrove Planting
You will all have received a letter concerning the mangrove planting on Friday of next week. We are hoping for a good turnout as this is an excellent and practical way of contributing to our students’ environmental awareness.

Puppet Workshop
Students in Years 5, 6, 7 & 8 very much enjoyed the puppet workshop run by Mrs Alice New. We thank her for her time and for generously sharing her skills and enthusiasm with us.

GCSEs and IGCSEs
Year 11’s exams have now started and we wish them all the best over the next few weeks. Details of arrangements for the examination period have been sent home in a separate letter.

SATs
SAT examinations for Year 9 start next week. Because of the public holidays we have had to do some re-scheduling. The students concerned have been informed of the details and we wish them well in their tests.
Sports Events
This is going to be a busy term for sports. Sports Day, inter-House badminton, inter-House cross-country, a primary football tournament and a secondary football tournament are all planned. I would like to thank Mr Leak for his indefatigable efforts to raise the standard and the profile of sports in the school.

Sports Day & Examination Dates
I am very pleased to inform you that Sports Day will now take place on Thursday, 24 June at Likas stadium. Because of this change of date, we have had to adjust our internal end-of-year examinations. These will now start on Friday, 18 June and finish on Wednesday, 23 June. There may also be additional papers for Year 10 students on Friday, 25 June. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that this date holds firm!

Badminton
We are offering our secondary students five sessions of badminton this term in their Friday morning sports lessons from 7 May to 4 June. These will take place at the Foo Chow hall from 9.00 – 10.00. Students will be taken to the venue by bus and as many as possible should have their own badminton rackets and shuttlecocks.

To accommodate these times, lessons 1 and 3 have been swopped over for these weeks.

Staff & Parents vs Pupils Football Match
A Staff & Parents vs Pupils football match will take place at 5pm on May 14 at the Sukma Archery Field. Any parents who would like to take part should notify the staff/parents supremo, Mr Leak. We need you!
The Little Mermaid
ELC and Reception will be going to see Seri Insan’s production of The Little Mermaid on Friday, 21 May at 9.30 am.

We also have tickets for the performance on Saturday, 22 May at 1.00 at Putera Ballroom. Tickets are available from the KIS school office priced RM15.

Carpet and Pillow Cover Donations
We would like to thank Mrs May Park Su Mi for donating a new carpet and pillow covers to the ELC classroom.

Chicken Pox
It has been confirmed that a student in the school has chicken pox. Please notify the school if there are any further cases.

Enjoy the extended weekend, and I look forward to seeing you all on Wednesday of next week.

Best wishes,
