Dear Parents

Holidays

Next week the school will be closed on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday because the public holidays for Prophet Mohammad’s Birthday and Wesak Day fall in the same week. As the school will only be open for two days next week, there will be no Newsletter.

PTA News

The PTA coffee morning, held at the home of Mrs Ling-Ling Park on Thursday, was a great success. Thanks go to Flora Wong for the egg tarts and to Shirley Wong, Margaret Lo, Phoon Sook Peng, Helen Wong, Anthea Lamb, Anna Kollert, Wati Knussi, Margreta Klauser, Nora Heywood, Alice Chung, Lotte Thomsen and Dorothea Sinsua for their contributions.

The PTA is organising a Book Fair on Thursday and Friday, May 22 and 23.  Books from Edukids Children’s Book Store will be on sale in the video room for these two days. Some of the proceeds from the sale of books will be donated to the school library.

The first issue of the KIS PTA News is being distributed with the Newsletter. Please take the time to complete the “Volunteer Form” and then simply place it in the suggestion box outside the school office. Ideally we would like all of our parents to volunteer their services and to become more involved in the school community.
HUTAN

We would like to thank Mrs Isabelle Anacrenaz of HUTAN who came to school this morning and gave an informative and enjoyable talk about orang utans in assembly. HUTAN is an organization that works with local communities for the conservation of orang utans and their habitat.  Some of the money raised by our students in the “Nature” art competition will be donated to this worthwhile organization.

Reception/ Year 1 Class
Next week will be Ms Johnstone’s last at the school. We thank Ms Johnstone for all of her efforts on behalf of the children and the school. Mrs Louise Hayman, a highly experienced teacher from New Zealand, will replace her. Some of you might remember Mrs Hayman who has visited the school several times before, once as a relief teacher and once to lead a course on “Reading Recovery” for the teachers.

Toy guns
We would like to remind parents that children should not bring toy guns to school. Some of these toys can fire projectiles and their use could easily lead to a serious accident.

Trip to Shangri-La’s Tanjung Aru Resort
On Tuesday Reception and Year 1 class visited Shangri-La’s Tunjung Aru Resort as part of their Geography unit on ‘Work within Kota Kinabalu’.

The children had a behind-the-scenes tour of the hotel and were not just observing but put to work! They folded towels in the Laundry Department and wore chefs’ hats and aprons in the kitchens where they cut pastry and iced cakes.

Thank you to Mrs Ogami, Mrs Heywood, Mrs Chen and Mrs Makii for providing transport to the hotel.  We would like to thank Mr Mark Heywood, General Manager of STAR, for coordinating the trip and providing a complimentary lunch and thank you also to Julia and Kuhen for their excellent tour of the hotel.

The children (and adults!) had a wonderful time.

Ms Johnstone?
Miss Jessica Donald
Tuesday, May 20, will be Miss Jessica’s last day at the school. Miss Jessica, who is the classroom assistant in Reception/Year 1, is leaving us to further her studies in Business. We wish her the best of luck in all of her future endeavours.

Swimming and SARS
Recently a number of children have not been attending swimming because of the SARS situation. As cough droplets transmit the virus that causes SARS, the chances of becoming infected at the swimming pool are the same as (or less than) in any other situation. While we share parents’ concerns about this disease, swimming is part of our curriculum and students are expected to attend swimming lessons. It is more important for children to maintain a high standard of personal hygiene such as regularly washing hands.
