Dear Parents

Chinese New Year

Last Friday, we celebrated Chinese New Year early thanks to the PTA. As a gesture of thanks to all of our parents and children who donated Christmas presents to the Seri Mangasih Centre, the PTA arranged a lion dance performance and lunch for the whole school. Many parents and all of our children witnessed an exciting lion dance that was followed by a delicious lunch. The children were treated to a visit by “Choi Sin”, the God of Prosperity, who gave out gold coins (made of chocolate). Our thanks go to Mrs Alice Chung and the PTA ladies for organizing such an enjoyable event.

Holiday

Next Friday, 31st January, the school will be closed for the Chinese New Year holiday. However Thursday will be a full school day and activities will be held as usual after school. The school will reopen on Wednesday, 5th February. We wish all of our Chinese families “Gong Xi Fa Cai”.

The Friendly Dugongs of Mantanani Island

After school on Friday, the Sabah Nature Club organized a talk and slide presentation about the dugongs of Mantanani Island. Ms Gillian Elliott who has spent a great deal of time studying these rare marine mammals gave the presentation. As well as giving us her time, Ms Elliott generously donated a framed picture of a dugong to the school.  Mrs Marsh and Mrs Lamb are to be thanked for organizing such an interesting talk.

Primary Assessment

Next week our Year 2 pupils will start their National Curriculum tasks. Their progress in reading, writing and mathematics will be assessed in-house. These tasks are designed for the children to take in their normal classroom setting. It is important that our pupils view these tasks as just ordinary school activities so that they do not feel pressurized.

Grade Cards

Next week the Secondary school grade cards will be sent home on Thursday

The Primary Production

Our primary department is currently organizing a production, “Hansel and Gretel”. The pupils who have major parts have quite a few lines to learn. We would be grateful if the parents of these budding actors could help them learn their lines at home.

Karaoke Club

The first meeting of the recently created KIS Karaoke Club was a great success. It was hugely popular and all those who took part are to be congratulated. There is still some space at the back of the room for any secondary students who may wish to be part of the audience, to offer some encouragement or even sing along. If you are coming next Wednesday at 2:30 please bring any Karaoke VCDs that you wish to play.  The maximum number of students is 20. ESL students would benefit greatly form Karaoke as their reading skills should improve at the same time as their singing. Sign up now!

Mr Shale has kindly donated two cordless microphones to the school. They will be very useful for oral examinations as well as for the Karaoke Club. Many thanks, Mr Shale.

Climbing Trees

A number of pupils have been reprimanded for climbing trees recently. Whilst we realize that this activity is good fun, it is potentially very dangerous. We would ask for help from every body in order to stop this before there is a serious accident.

Visitors from Sweden

Two Swedish trainee teachers will be visiting the school in the near future. While at the school they will be observing and helping out with lessons. Last year we had a similar visit from two Swedes, Brian and Michael, that proved to be very successful. The young ladies are 18 and 19. If anyone is able to provide accommodation for them please see Mr Davies for more details.
