Jym's World Mix

Jym Daly

Take it personally
A communication from Mad Jym of Loop Guru, (the Godfathers of global fusion) Reply to me at: [email protected] or mobile no: 07968 397 603.

Whats it all about? Its an idea that goes like this; an album called World Mix with some of the worlds fav bands, songs and individuals from Ravi Sahanka to the Rolling Stones for instance. The names of the individual band members or solo artists are then spilt up into four big buckets, 1 drums and rhythm, 2 bass, 3 melody, 4, singers.

So all the drummers from every act involved in World Mix will be slung in one bucket together, all singers in another, you get the idea. Then a big draw where the names are drawn randomly to re-construct the bands. For instance as in the example above, the rolling stones has a drummer, bass guitar, lead and singer, so out of the drummer bucket maybe the Rolling Stone drummer is now a tablar player, maybe Talvin Sing. On bass maybe a classical Cellist, melody handled by a Russian accordionist, Posh Spice or Pavarotti on vocals, all doing I cant get no satisfaction in whatever style arises from the combination.

Why? I had been feeling that aids was of course a terrible thing for those who have it or are at risk of getting it but its like yesterdays news, although the white flag was not flown, it is practically over, huh?!. Besides, I was safe and even a little smug inside a long term loving relationship. When my partner bravely decided to clean up the past by revealing that she had had an affair on me four years ago, I was suddenly and sharply awake to the fact that it is truly outside of my control to protect myself from exposure to this disease, that it is a disease we have as one race, the human race. If anyone has it, we all have it, the random world mix of sexual partners alone already has us all in the draw, our names could be drawn at any time.

The spread of aids is up by 74% in Africa, to imagine this has nothing to do with you personally is like one healthy bit of a decayed tooth going pheww, at least I havent got it! Each person educated in safe sex practice and given the practical means to do so effects immediately a long line of people that could lead to you. Proceeds from this album beyond actual production costs will go directly to action in Africa to prevent the spread of aids and deal with the care of those thousands of children left alone because of aids. Every second where no effort to effect change adds hundreds of potential links of partners to the spread of Aids. Fundraising will go to charities involved in effecting change in Africa and aids awareness world-wide. Care are currently in action and will be the first to benefit from World Mix, more to be added as the project developes.

Storytelling in the Park

Kevin Ashbridge

Kevin Ashbridge is organising an event in St Albans called "Storytelling in the Park". Three storytellers will tell a traditional tale from their own ethic background (Anglo-Saxon, Indian and Chinese traditions). What can come out of it is an understanding that all cultures take the same delight in sharing their humanity through story. The event is being sponsored by local businesses, and local community leaders have been involved in its realization. The High Sheriff of Hertfordshire has graciously consented to act as Patron for the event. It will take place in Verulamuim Park on 15th September, starting at 3PM. All are welcome!

The residents there are mainly unaccompanied minors for whom Greenwich social services has a duty of care under the Children's Act. There are about 10 residents altogether, most of whom are young Kosovan men (16-17) although there is also an elderly Zimbabwean lady and her grandson.

A ContactsDatabase at the British Library

Andrea Varney

Researching for a PhD or writing a book can be a very lonely and isolating experience, and I feel that it is important tocreate a greater feeling of cooperation, openness and friendship within the community of readers working at the British Library - one ofmost importantresearch centres in the world. I am establishing a database of readers' details to be placed in the reading rooms, so that people can get in touch with those who share their research interests, pass ondetails of useful resources, and develop contacts for the future. I feel this is a simple and effective way to make the most of the fantastic resources at the library, not only in terms of books, but in terms of people who come to the library from all over the world. Initially, in early September, the database will take the form of a folder containing printed details of each reader wishing to use the service. The library then has plans to develop this into a website in the future.

The Rhythm of Life

Jane Fleming-Willcox

An evening hosted by Bill Oddie. The concert will take place on Saturday 8th September at The English Folk Dance and Song Society based at Cecil Sharpe House, 2 Regents Park Road, London NW1 7AY. Starting at 7.45 pm (bar open from 7.00pm) and finishing at 10.30 pm, the evening will consist of the following:

The Can't Sing ~ Won't Sing Choir

This group has been specially formed for the concert. I advertised for a group of people who like to sing but don't because they aren't too confident in their own abilities. Most of them can't read a note of music and have never performed in public before, so it is a real achievement for them. I hope they inspire other people to do something about the things they enjoy. I am a part of this choir!

Iberian Dancers

Headed up by Elsa Perez, this group of Spanish dancers will be giving us a taste of spain!

Emashi

An African Dance group, will be showing us the delights of Tribal African Dance

Belly Dancers

Zenuba, Cate and Isobel will be dancing to their own choreographed piece and then coming together for a final show of their talents

Fusion Drummers

Godwin Awalla, Richard Hasseck and friends will be playing a fusion of African, Latin and Brazillian drumming to liven up the audience.

Finale Musicians

Sandor Hatvany, an up and coming young violinist will be playing Romanian gypsy music followed by a good old world music jam session with other musicians.

The focus of the evening is to bring together all kinds of people from different walks of life to appreciate and celebrate world music and at the same time, raise some money for the Nordoff Robbins Music Therapy Centre in Kentish Town.

Ive also got a raffle going and so far have donations from Harrods, Acumedic the Chinese Medicine Centre, HMV, Fresh Salon in Kensington and some friends who have donated CDs and Computer games through their work.

Inspiring the Workplace

Roger Hollis

My project is to create a rewarding and inspiring place for people to come to work in.

The intention is to achieve a specific and measurable result by embarking on a number of communication initiatives culminating in a Company wide presentation.

I have enrolled a number of senior managers to become leaders in this project, both to organise and participate in the event, and to commit to achieving the outcome of the project.

Following the event we will be researching its success through the completion of a questionnaire and the creation of teams to advise and work with the Management Team on future initiatives.

Ceramic Exhibition

Guy Shanley

The following is a synopsis of the project I have been working on for the past couple of months.

It was inspired by a trip I made to the Potteries Museum and Art Gallery in Stoke-on-Trent. There I saw a wonderful collection of ceramics from the area from the seventeenth to the twentieth century. Also shown were displays of how ceramics are made and what innovations were introduced over this time, especially in the late 18th and early 19th centuries such as transfer printing and the introduction of bone china.

These are items we all use daily and yet most of use know little about.

My initial idea was to produce a book on the subject (there are plenty of books around on ceramics but nothing contemporary on the Potteries and the Museum collection). Later my idea transmuted from a book to having an exhibtiion at a major museum in London in which the vision, creativity, industry, design and innovations of the manufacturers, such as Minton, Spode, Doulton and Wedgewood could be discussed and displayed.

Of course museums have collections of ceramics from this area in their galleries but I dont personally recall an exhibition which looks at this industry afresh, possibly looking to see what effect it had on other countries and where the industry is going today.

Ive spoken to quite a few curators, writers on the subject and dealers and as usual it is money and lack of it that seems to get in the way. Apparently it is also an ambitious project and there was concern that it would just be too big and it was difficult to know where to begin. I, however, have seen that the Museum in Stoke-on-Trent are able to present a wide selection of ceramics beautifully and informatively and feel sure that it could be done in London (or New York or Paris) with panache and generate interest.

Christine Carter

Way beyond: what next for the footsoldiers of the .com wars?

Neil Gibb

The .com boom was a unique period in history. A time when you could say the rules were changed. Or you could say we all lost the plot.

Some people made a mint. A lot more burnt a fortune.

But on the ground a group of people create a new industry, had some fun, some strife, worked liked dogs, did some heroic work and made some mistakes.

But now the industry is shaking out and we're all thinking 'what next?'

Way beyond is a group for these people. A mailing list to discuss. And events both to celebrate what we did, and hear people's views about what's next.

One mailing list. Two gatherings - fun, panter, digital camera's a clicking.

Dance Karaokee

Alison Gould

My project is to start a new clubbing trend called 'Dance kareokee'. Its never been done before. Singing kareokee gives people the opportunity to sing the way they would sing in the bathroom. 'Dance kareokee' gives everyone the chance to dance as you would in the living room when no-one is looking. Its not a competition, you just pick a song and have fun with it with all the floor space you like.

Current status

Vivid & Elite (a very large club in Romford , Essex) have taken on this idea and will incorporate it into their Saturday nights in the spirit of 'fun and games'.

The idea is copyrighted and I will take it to clubs in London as soon as the first event has happened.

The first event is scheduled for either 29/9 or 6/10. I will email when this is confirmed.

There is an opportunity for this to be our SELP party event on Sat 27/10 if the everyone is enrolled! Romford is a 20min train journey from Liverpool St station (London), and the club is 2 mins from the station so it's accessable.
