No more throw away people - and no more throw away planet

Cally Timebank Recycling Litter Pick Event.

On Saturday 17 May Cally timebank will hold a litter picking event with a difference. Starting at 10am at Freightliners Farm Volunteers will collect rubbish from the estates & streets of the area (see planned route below). All the litter collected will be weighed & the recycleable rubbish will be separated & taken to the nearest recycling points. Everyone who takes part will earn timeb ank credits which they can use to obtain energy efficient products like compact fluorescent lightbulbs, or help from a neighbour. Refreshments will be provided. If you would like to take part in the event please e-mail [email protected] or call Kirsty on 020 7 700 0486.

Proposed Route
Freightliners Farm
Westbourne Estate
Roman Way
Caledonian Road Estate
Boston Estate
Caledonian Road (southbound to Copenhagen Street)
Hemingford Road/Matilda Street/Thornhill Crescent
Lofting Road/Barnsbury Square
Westbourne Road/Offord Road/Arundle Square

The route may be currtailed if time runs out - & some of the streets visited at a later date.

If you select one of the energy efficiency products it would be most useful if you can keep a record of your weekly electricity usage to guage the amount of electricity & money saved by using each one.

The questionnaire mentioned in the February/March newsletter is still being distributed. You may receive a copy with this newsletter.

The summary of findings will be published when all of the information has been successfully collated.

People really count

In 2000 Edgar Cahn write an inspiring book about time banking - its called "No More Throw Away People". It explains in detail some of the problems we face in our society and how he thinks time banking can help solve them.

A timebank gives people the opportunity to do something valuable that will help everyone - and be thanked & be recognised for doing so. If you make the effort to separate your rubbish for recycling you are making an effort to look after the planet. Its easy to throw all of your rubbish into one or more bin bag, knowing that it will be collected & burnt or landfilled. The Energy from Waste Companies claim that they create valuable electricity from the rubbish they incinerate but the energy produced is much less than what is required to make replacement products.

By recycling you help save energy.

The UK's landfill sites are close to overflowing. Like incinerating waste, ladfilling household rubbish is incredibly wasteful. Energy There is limited space

People need to feel valued - by time banking people are encouraged to help each other & the community by being given the opportunity to earn credits which they can use to improve their lives. In every community there are many tasks that need doing but it is often difficult to find someone to do them. The monetary value of both products and services depends on their scarcity: if something is in low supply and high demand it is expensive but if it is plentiful it is cheap. But whilst, sharedealers make lots of money by speculating and trading in pieces of paper, many people who do wonderful constructive work that keeps our society running aren't valued by our economic system. To earn money people travel many miles to work in offices and the communities where they live are left neglected. There doesn't seem to be enough money to attract people to spend time improving their streets and estates. And with our increasing long-working hours culture many claim they do not have enough time for themselves let alone toi help their neighbours & improve the area they live. Timebanks may help reverse this trend - the diminishing level of social capital.

Farmers Markets Over the last 4 years the Framers Market by Camden Passage/Islington Green has been thriving. Farmers who work within 100 miles of the M25 are eligible to particpate: they sell the food that they have grown every Sunday from 10 am until 2pm. The Cally Timebank is investigating the possibiility of buying food collectively to order. Participants will be able to check from a list what produce is available, arrange to purchase (they will need to pay cash for the food), and pay for the delivery through the time credits they have earnt.

If you are interested in finding out more about this please e-mail Kirsty.

Recycling The paper, bottle & can banks have disappeared from outside Caledonian Road tube station. There isn't enough room on the pavement because of the major building work oppsite the station. The nearest bansk are at Higbury & Islington or Carnegie Street. However, there are optimistic signs that the estate recycling facilities will be on their way soon. The recycling collection pilot is been working successfully now for over six months. Crates are availbale for estate residents who would like to particpate (contact Kirsty by e-mail or calling 0w20 7 700 0486.

Credit
For every hour residents spend helping other people or the community as a whole (e.g. sorting their waste/surveying the local area & reporting problems (vandalism/damge to trees, etc.)/helping neighbours in difficulty) a timebank credit is earned (a Cally). We have now recycled over 200 kilograms of bottles, paper & cans. Participants can use the credits they earn to buy eneregy efficient lightbulbs, draught proofing and/or environmentally-friendly paints.

Watch this space - these pages will be updated regularly.
