Moving In (c. 1999)
Characters:
Chris - early-twenties male
Vic - early-twenties female
Time:
A fall afternoon.
Place:
In an empty room.
(The curtain rises.
The stage is empty except for
CHRIS and VIC with a painting.
It is left against the wall.
VIC is carrying a purse.)
CHRIS
Hey, where do you think this picture should go?
(VIC gestures to a place off-
center.)
VIC
How about here?
CHRIS
No, that doesn't work.
(VIC gestures to another
off-center place.)
VIC
Here?
CHRIS
No, I don't like that either.
VIC
Well, where do you want it put?
(CHRIS gestures toward the
center.)
CHRIS
How about here?
VIC
That's typical, right in the middle.
CHRIS
I like symmetry.
VIC
I think it would look better if it were closer to the wall. That way it would
attract attention.
CHRIS
How would it do that?
VIC
Because it's not in the middle. Paintings are always in the middle.
CHRIS
That's why it fits here.
VIC
You're not listening to me.
CHRIS
Yes, I am.
VIC
No, you're not.
CHRIS
Whatever.
VIC
Look, I'm not going to bother anymore. Put it where you want.
CHRIS
Thank you . . . so, where are the nails?
VIC
I don't know.
CHRIS
. . . Great.
(CHRIS walks out.
VIC takes out a nail and a
hammer from her purse and
pounds the nail where she
originally wanted the
painting, hangs up the
painting, and leaves.
The curtain falls.)
