We were called in after a contractor was hurt when the deck he was building fell. This is what we found.
Although you can't see it, there is one nail toe-nailed up into this joist from the bottom. It was the only nail in this end of the board. The contractor was actually walking around on top of these joists.
Notice the nail positions in both of these boards. Would you feel safe on this deck?
This is the half of the deck that didn't fall. Nothing was bolted to the house at this point and the diagonal bracing under the deck was insufficient. The original contractor's labor quote was about half the industry average, and even though he didn't complete more than 15% of the work he expected 60% of the money when he bailed out.
