QE2 TO THE RESCUE
On 20th August 1990 at 12.35 pm a mayday message was received from radio Denmark stating that the Norwegian oil drilling platform " West Gamma " was in distress. The rig was adrift and the helicopter landing station destroyed and had 49 persons on board.  The weather was North West Force 11, barometer 1001.5 and falling, rough bow sea and heavy swell, overcast and rain. The ship stayed at the scene for many hours and suffered damage internally, broken light fittings, damaged cabins due to flooding, and lost over 80% of its glasswear.  At 16.24 the Captain Ronald Warwick was told he could leave the scene as the crew wished to stay on board the rig.
On arrival at Bergen, we wre informed that the rig had capsized and all the men went into the sea, to makematters worse one of the rescue craft had capsized too. Fortunately all lives were saved.
