Cub Scout Pack Introduction

WELCOME TO CUB SCOUT PACK 550!

The purpose of the Boy Scouts of America, incorporated on February 8, 1910, and chartered  by Congress in 1916, is to provide an educational program for boys and young adults to build character, to train in the responsibilities of participating citizenship, and to develop personal fitness.

As Cub Scouts, what that means is have a lot of fun while doing it!!

Who participates?  Besides your son and the leaders, YOU DO!  Cub Scouts is a program for sons and their parents or another adult who will participate with them as a partner.  Most of the advancement and award activities are done one-on-one with their adult partner at home or at Den meetings.  Meetings are not a drop-off type of activity as they were years ago.  From time to time a boy can go to a Den meeting or outing without an adult partner, but they need to be there to help and have fun.  For Pack meetings, the adult should always be there because that’s where we honor the boys for all their hard work and accomplishments.  They need to see you there to show your pride.

When and where do we meet?  Our monthly Pack Meetings are on the first Tuesday of each month at the First Congregational Church’s basement multi-purpose room, across from Kirkland City Hall at the intersection of 5th Ave. and 1st St..  In addition to the Pack Meetings, the Dens may meet more during the month on dates of mutual agreement, sometimes at the church or at another place they decide on.  Other outings on weekends are typical from time to time as the Den parents decide.

How much?  Pack dues are $50 for this year; please make checks to Cub Scout Pack 550.  That includes a subscription to Boys Life magazine, and dues to the Chief Seattle Council and the Boy Scouts of America.  It also pays for the Pack’s operations, including awards, insurance and other expenses.  Your son will also need a uniform shirt and a handbook to work on his advancement.  You can order these by mail or in person.  The people at the Seattle Scout Shop are REALLY helpful and can walk you through your order

How about that cool uniform shirt? The minimum to get is listed below, but you can also get hats, belts, and pants.  Some of our boys go that far, but it’s purely up to you and your son.

For all scouts, the minimum to get would be a) a short sleeve shirt (big enough to grow into until he’s 11!), b) neckerchief, c) neckerchief slide, d) Council shoulder patch, e) council “rounder” patch, f) Den number patch, g) Pack numerals (550) from the cubmaster, h) the World scouting patch and I) the handbook for his grade (Tiger/Wolf/Bear/Webelos).  For 2006, we are asking all new tiger cubs to also purchase a red badge vest to show of the badges that they earn as a scout.   To figure out where to sew all that stuff, see Uniform

SEWING HINT: Staple the patches in place on the shirt before sewing, then remove staples afterward. Or you can use Badge Magic that is a heat activated sticker
