The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich: A History of Nazi Germany
William Shirer

I've often wondered how Germany could elect a man like Hitler. Even more so, how could they sit by and watch him do the things he did? Did they even know what he was doing?

The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich is the definitive book on Hitler. Unfortunately, it's around 1100 pages. I read the first chapter and got the feeling it was more a biography on Hitler, than a story about the German people and what was going on in the country. I have no doubt that it is written about somewhere in the book, but I didn't feel like plodding through stuff I wasn't that interested in just to pick out the parts that I needed.

I'll search for a book that's more concise and to the point. Or at least the point I'm looking for.
