A Twist in Time
by Wicked Witches
PART 2
When both men stepped out of the hotel's elevator, Sam practically launched himself forward, as far from Ben as possible. He didn't know if this guy was always so 'playful' or whether it was something exclusive to him but he swore to himself if he grabbed his butt one more time, he'd punch him one.
At least it was obvious they weren't actually lovers, something he thanked God, or whoever made him leap for. Apparently Karl was straight, or so it seemed from what he had heard earlier and from what Ben was implying. Sam wanted to get away from him and wait for Al. What mission could he have here, stop this guy from raping him?
Unfortunately, this was a big hotel and he didn't have a slightest idea which room was his. He decided to follow Ben and somehow figure out where he lived. He had checked his pockets earlier, he had no key, so either he shared his room with someone, who he hoped was not Ben, or he had lost it.
At least he noticed to his relief, that it wasn't some motel but a grade-A hotel and they were booked in apartments, so it looked like they had money.
"So, sugar," Ben decided to play a little more as they started to walk slowly down the hall "Have you considered my proposition? I can show you things no woman could."
"I think I'll skip this one. No offence of course but you don't have *it*."
Sam a long time ago stopped being skittish and started to throw sardonic remarks.
Apparently that was what this guy expected and he was more than willing to fit into his role.
"Eh, and here was I thinking I wouldn't have to be alone tonight. Ya know, in moments like this, I start to think that being monogamous is something good. Not much variety but at least you have someone to lick your hot spots without leaving home or spending any money but then of course, there are always fights, couches and all that crap."
Sam observed as Ben's expression turned from mocking to wistful.
"Jesus, Lewis. Tell me to shut up or I'll run to Lee's room... something we both might regret." Even if his words were meant as a joke his tone was almost sad. Sam felt a strange rush of sympathy towards this man.
"It's going to be ok." he said not quite sure from where the words came from
Ben seemed to ignore the last sentence "I wonder if Darren is still up. I must tell him that Danny won't be coming home early." He grinned again, his grim face forgotten already.
Sam sighed and ran after him.
They arrived at a door, Ben knocked once, not waiting for any answer busted inside.
Sam held his breath for a sec. He knew his job, in this room they could just as easily find a sleeping man as a dead body. Fortunately for him, they found neither, only two men and four women sitting or lying in the circle on the floor, playing Scrabble. They were apparently familiar with each other cos instead of screaming and cursing at that sudden appearance, they greeted them both.
"Oh, my my," Ben mocked "a slumber party? And I wasn't invited? Nah, it's apparently girls night, ain't it?"
One of the men, obviously older threw him a dirty look. "I would invite ya but to play Scrabble ya have to know how to read."
"Hey! I know how to read." Protested Ben
"Sure" laughed one of the girls "You know how to spell 'beer' and 'sex' and neither of them are very high scores, unless of course you can fit that 'X' on a triple letter."
"Nice..." Sam turned around, relieved to hear a familiar voice behind him.
"Where have you been," Sam snarled through clenched teeth, hoping that no one could hear him.
"Aye?" Ben asked, hearing his friends comment, "I've been with you and this lot have been playing parlour games. Or was that more of a "where have you been all my life" type of question."
"N-No," stuttered Sam once again angry at his carelessness. This leap had him really jumpy and not a small proportion of the blame for this was levelled at the shoulders of the highly flirtatious man before him. He fumbled in his pockets for some kind of cover story. " I meant...this," he announced pulling out the only thing he could find. A Snickers wrapper!
All the people in the room looked at the man they thought was Karl, concern and puzzlement etched across their faces. Sam looked down at the thing he held in his hands.
"Oh great save," Al snickered.
"It's very dear to me," Sam told the others in the room, "I've had it a long time."
"Yeah since I bought it for you this afternoon," one of the girls pointed out with a huge grin on her face, "Is there something you want to tell me Karl?"
Everyone, including Al, began to chuckle, all except one man, the older man, who stood up from his seat on the floor and walked over to his friend.
"You OK Karl," he asked softly, "you seem kinda out of it,"
"Yeah...I'm...it's just I...I think I need to sleep."
The other man studied him for a minute, concern clear in his furrowed brow and clear blue eyes. "Yeah I think that'd be a good idea Karl. D'you need someone to help you to your room."
"I'll do it," Ben offered a little too quickly for Sam's liking.
"No," his response was even quicker and very loud. "Can you take me?" He asked the blue-eyed man, knowing that this one would make no attempt to get into his pants.
"That's Darren Hayes," Al offered as he pulled strongly on his cigar, the past few seconds had been fun and he was surely tempted to make Sam sweat a little longer, but time could possibly be a factor here, so he volunteered the information willingly.
"Please Darren?" Sam asked once more, grateful for the lifebelt Al had thrown.
"Sure, no problem" nodded singer, still not sure about Karl, though. The drummer seemed so... not himself, even if Darren couldn't explain this thought in any rational way.
As they both disappeared in the hall, Ben laughed out loud. "Poor hun." He snickered, pointing with his thumb at where Karl had stood just a second before "He barely touched his beer, I think one more 'accident' like that and he can join your little club of maidens."
"Hey! Do I look like a maiden to you? I don't even have one good skirt. Id go if I wasn't ill!" Lee hadn't felt insulted, he had heard it all before but of course he had to defend his honour... sort of. He didn't feel too good, sure, but it was just a mild cold, nothing that should stop him in any other circumstances. The real reason of his absence at the bar had just left the room followed by an obviously confused drummer. He despised himself for doing this but he had to use every occasion to be close to Darren like that. Yeah, it was sick but what else was left for him anyway?
Ben took few steps in Lee's direction and leaned down "Well, sugar, if you are ill, then maybe you should go to bed. I'll take care of you, give you warm milk and stuff." He whispered to bassist's ear but loud enough for everyone to hear. Leo giggled. "Look out, Lee. I think he feels frustrated cos Karl decided to be straight after all."
Lee rolled his eyes but more to play along, than from real annoyance. He had to admit that he liked that proposition, it reminded him of one time, long ago, when he had had a pneumonia and John was so nice to him, he had let him stay in bed for almost a week. Of course Lee would never allow himself to be so slovenly now but it had brought some nice memories. "I will handle this, thank You." he smiled at his concerned friend and turning to attention to Ben shrugged "I think I'll stay here."
"Fine by me but if you do, then I'm afraid that I'll have to as well, ya know, in case you pass out or something." stated Ben as he flipped himself at the floor beside Lee and wrapped his arms around his friend's waist. Lee gulped feeling the other mans heat so near him. Yeah, it was Darren he loved with all his heart but Ben was just so good for him, that it sometimes scared him. He felt bad having that sort of kindness directed towards him, even if that was just of friendship.
"Ok, honey, show daddy what were you planning to do with all those nice coloured plates." Laughed Ben, his fingers locking themselves tightly on Lee's belly.

"Listen Karl, are you sure you're going to be OK," Darren asked as they reached Karl's room. "I could come and sit with you for a while if you like, until Dan gets back at least. Why didn't he come back with you guys?"
"Don't say anything Sam," Al spoke over the other mans shoulder, "don't want to make this any more complicated than it already is."
"He...he was talking to one of his mates" Sam knew immediately that had been another mistake. The way Al smacked himself against the head left no doubt in his mind about that. The frantic head shaking and the way Al moved his finger across his neck in a throat cutting gesture only confirmed this.
"His mate?" Darren asked, suspicion all over his face, "and what mate is this? I wasn't aware he had any mates here"
"I-I mean this bloke he made friends with, we were chatting and they seemed to have a lot in common, so he stayed to talk when we left."
"Oh yeah," Darren asked, trying to quell the jealousy that surged through him, "and what exactly did they have in common?"
Sam looked at Al who promptly began twiddling his fingers in front of his groin.
"Er...they both like to masturbate." Al began leaping up and down, "Play the guitar!!!!" he bellowed at his confused friend
I mean they both play the guitar," Sam pushed.
"I think you should get some sleep Karl," Darren said softly.
Sam nodded "Yeah, I guess I should. Erm..." he remembered something, feeling really stupid all of a sudden "I think I lost my keys..."
Darren looked at him as he grew a second head "You left them with me, remember? In case you got too drunk to go to your own room"
"Yeah, of course, sorry, I had totally forgotten" he tried to explain himself "I am so tired that I can barely remember my name."
"Ok..." Darren didn't seemed to be totally convinced by this but to Sam's relief he didn't continue the subject as he took a key from his back pocket and opened the door. "Have a good night Karl, I'll have Ben check on you later, ya know, just in case."
Sam gulped at the thought of having that man in his room, alone, in the middle of the night but nodded wanting to be left alone with AL as soon a possible "Yeah, thanks Darren." He smiled and entered Karl's room, sighing with relief as the door closed behind him and Al.
"Where the hell were you?" Sam snapped the moment the two of them were alone.
"I'm sorry Sam. There was an electrical storm and I couldn't get here any sooner. It was kind of fun though, my late arrival, don't you think?"
"No I don't think. I have spent the past half an hour being mauled, manhandled, propositioned and tormented. What part of that do you define as fun."
"Ok Ok, "Al conceded, "perhaps fun wasn't the correct word."
"Do you think it's about time you told me where the hell I am and what we are doing here, before I get the opportunity to make anymore monumental blunders?"
"Yes yes," Al conceded as he took another take of his cigar and began punching keys on the colourful device he held, still snickering to himself as he recalled the masturbation comment. "Let's see, you're in the body of a Mr.. Karl Lewis, who is the drummer in a big time 90's band called Savage Garden. Ziggy says there is an 89% chance that you are here to prevent Lee Novak, the bands bassist, the other guy playing scrabble from killing himself. It's not only his death you would prevent. Lee's suicide acted as a catalyst for the gut that was hitting on you, Ben Carey, to kill the other two guys, Daniel Jones and Darren Hayes, while out of his head on pain numbing drugs, before taking his own life"
Sam's eyes widened. Two suicides and a double murder? Now this was something he hadn't experienced yet. He took a deep breath, trying to swallow the news without chocking himself. "Ok..." he started slowly "When did it happen? Tomorrow?"
Al looked at him a little sheepishly "Erm... actually... it happened... a few months from now on. Lee's death that is. The murderers will be committed in about a year."
"What!?" Sam shouted then quickly put a hand on his mouth. The last thing he needed was a herd of people bursting into his room.
"What do you mean 'in about a year'" he started again, this time much more quieter "How am I suppose to stop them from doing something that will happened 'in about a year'?"
"Erm..." stuttered Al "We are not sure yet, you see... actually nothing in this case is clear. We are not even sure if it was Lee's death that made Ben kill them. Ziggy suspects that something that happened this night, caused a whole chain of events that ended... with this."
"Ok... How am I suppose to know what it was and what to do, if even Ziggy doesn't know it?"
"The only real clue we have to that Sam is a brief scribbled suicide note that Mr. Carey left. It doesn't say much, and the guy was pretty out of it, but perhaps it'll give us some clues."
"OK, so what exactly does it say?"
"I'm sorry, but Lee was mine and Dan hurt him."
"So perhaps we have to prevent Dan from hurting him. But how do we do that if we don't know what he did?"
"It seems that in all likelihood, whatever led to Lee's suicide happens tonight," Al reasoned as they struggled for answers, "why else would you leap now...months before the actual events begin."
"And it has something to do with Dan, or at least Ben suspected it had something to do with him." Sam continued. "Perhaps it would be an idea to find Mr.. Jones and see if we can find some more clues?"
Al nodded "I guess that would be the best idea. "You remember when you left him?"
"Sure, at the bar with some girl and...oh oh..." Sam stopped suddenly and looked at Al "What oh oh... I don't like the sound of that, Sam."
"We left him with some girl, as far as I can see, Daniel and Darren are lovers, right?"
Al shrugged "Yeah, they were, why?"
"Cos maybe, let's just assume, that girl was somehow involved with Lee. Maybe they were lovers and Mr. Jones presence somehow caused them to break up." Al didn't answer for few seconds and then turn his head in denial.
"Not likely. According to Ziggy, our dear Mr. Novak doesn't find women's company as soothing as we do."
Sam's eyebrow went up "Come again?"
"He's gay."
"Jesus! Am I the only straight person... eh, I mean, is *Karl* the only straight person in that band?"
Al snickered "well, apparentlythey don't know what they are missing thoughyou saw that brunette's legs..." Sam's holographic friend was about to describe all Elisa's charms, when Sam brutally stopped him "We don't have any time for that. If that's not it, then what for God's sake!?"
"Wait," Sam said suddenly as an uneasy feeling crept into his bones, "you don't suppose...I mean, he's pretty drunk, but he didn't really seem the type, but then is there a type?"
"What Sam? Spit it."
"You don't think Dan made some kind of unwelcome advance on Lee?"
"An unwelcome advance Sam? You think that'd lead someone to suicide? " Al shook his head, "No it'd have to be something much heavier than that...perhaps...Oh!!" Al stopped short as a new realization hit him. "You don't suppose he...raped the guy?"
"Heck Al," Sam confessed, "I sure as hell hope not, but there is no way we can prevent it if we are sat here and Daniel is in some bar drinking himself stupid." Sam grabbed the jacket that he had hung over the back of a chair only minutes earlier. "I'm going back to the bar now. I only hope we aren't too late."
