And now they were gone and he knew the reason, no matter how much he wanted to deny it, to scream and shout “WHY?” He knew that it was his fault, that he’d driven them away with his absences that the Gilroy mess had just been the last straw for Corrine. Still he couldn’t stand that fact that she hadn’t trusted him enough to wait, for him to explain everything to her, for him to make things better between them, if she’d just waited like he’d told her to. He couldn’t stay in that house, his ruined and empty house. Without them there he couldn’t bear it. He drove blindly, unthinking and found himself at Shane’s place, somewhere he could hide from all the pain. Shane looked surprised to see him, concerned but he didn’t try and force him to open up and spill his guts over the coffee table. “Corrine left me.” Those three words were all that needed to be said. Shane sat with him, arm around his shoulder as he broke down for the second time that night. Silent tears, no words just shaking sobs of grief and rage and frustration. He let it all go and Shane was there silently holding on to him, the calm in the centre of Vic’s storm. And after the rivers of tears had dried up and the shaking had subsided Shane looked into his eyes and told him that everything would be OK, that they’d never had a problem that they hadn’t been able to crack and for that moment he let himself believe it. Before he knew what he was doing his lips were on Shane’s trying to find a way to forget his pain, to put off feeling till tomorrow. He kissed him roughly taking the comfort his friend was offering. Shane fought against the savageness of the kiss, slowing it, trying to soothe his spirit. He let Vic’s tongue roughly probe his mouth, his lips pressing hard against Shane’s consuming his mouth, everything he offered. Shane kept his hand on Vic’s shoulder stroking, soothing until they finally broke apart. “You can take the bed I’ll sleep on the couch.” He stood and Vic followed him to the bedroom. He grabbed a pillow and a blanket from a closet. “Bathroom’s through there.” He gestured towards a closed door on the other side of the room. "If you need anything I’ll be out there ok.” He stopped wanting to say something reassuring but not finding the words. Vic looked up, his eyes were distant but a flash of gratitude went through them as he looked at Shane. “Night.” Vic nodded as Shane left the room shutting the door behind him. He threw his jacket off onto the floor and sat down on the bed head in hands as he fought back the anger and the pain. Numbness started to set in, he felt cold, empty, dead inside. Finis
