The Middle-Distance of the Mind.
February 2002

This is the middle-distance of the mind,
Neither far nor near.

For in farness there is at least
The immanence of mystery:
Thus the yellow and speckled pear,
Placed at the end of the white corridor
(Long and white and narrow and white)
Looms and floats in the mind,
More than itself because merely itself;

And in nearness there is at least
The immediacy of ecstasy:
Thus the firm and sweet pear,
Placed so against the teeth,
Bursts and splashes at the back of the tongue
Until pear is not distinguished from self,
Nor the distinction conceived.

But this is the middle-distance of the mind,
Of which nothing can be said.
