Introduction:
Who are the major literary figures?Iambic PentameterIn order to reach the top, the author must have written a major famous poem. This is true because poetry is much harder to write.
- Shakespeare (first in English to be inducted to Hall of Fame)
- Chaucer
- Spencer
- Milton, Paradise Lost
- Pope
- Wordworth
- Byron
Robert: Do the rich dictate to us what is good or bad?
Dr. Hayward: It could be the same thing. The elite try to determine what is good for all of us. A good poet will try to create works that other poets think is great at that time. However some of these poets were simply loved by the people of the streets, the common people of the time.
What does a poet do when poeticizing?Example:-Poetry is written in stanzas, generally a set number of lines, which often develop one idea. Each line generally has a set of number of syllables and often uses a fixed rhyme pattern. May also contain a fixed meter. Also, a stanza is often but not always syntactically complete.
Why do we have to know this?
-So that we may understand how the poets wrote their poetry.
"A fool might once himself in verse expose,
Now one in verse means many more in prose".
Pope, Essay on Criticism
"A FOOL | might ONE| himSELF | in VERSE | exPOSE,Pattern and Variation:Now ONE | in VERSE | MEANS MAN|y MORE| in PROSE".
One rule is: You can never change the stress on a polysibalic word.
For Example: the stress of the word 'expose' could not change.
Of the 10 syllables, 5 are accented.
One accented (+) plus one unaccented is a foot.
This type of poetry is iambic pentameter. 75% of all poetry.
Now ONE | in VERSE | MEANS MAN|y MORE| in PROSE.
Because "means" is the verb it is stressed. Two stresses together is called a spondee.

ThoROUGH | SHARP SEAS | in WIN | ter NIGHTS | DOTH PASS.
Stressed is noticed in intonation, which is the rise of one's voice.
In some instances, the spondee echoes the meaning of the words- such as "SHARP SEAS".
The author may put an extra stress on "Charged" because it is a pun, which means it has tow meanings.
/ is a trochee, which is also a foot in poetry.
Robert suggests Dr. Hayward teach the class using poetry.Last page of Syllabus packet:Dr. Hayward reply:
ForGIVE me SIR if METer I esCHEW
My MIND is EMPty; MY idEAS are FEW.
This proves that it would just take too long.
Bush had better get the troops out of Iraq.Put the sentence into iambic pentameter. The words may be changed or replaced to do this.
Most songs are written in trochaic rhythm, which means it is falling.
