Spotlight on Illieana George

by Bernadine McIntosh

Idle hands are the devil's workshop. So reads the old proverb. This definitely does not apply to 16 year old Ilieana George whose greatest concern at this time is finding the right college.
This twelfth grade St. Paul's Methodist College student keeps herself busy with a number of extra-curricular activities.

Ilieana, a very pleasant, out going young lady, bubbles over with enthusiasm for the clubs that she is involved with at school. Presently Ilieana serves as President of the Rangers, a club for girls ages 14 and above. As President of Rangers she plans and directs all meetings. Why would young ladies to want to join Rangers? I inquired. Ilieana's reply was, "Because it's fun! We play fun games outdoors, have etiquette training and more.

Ilieana serves as secretary of two clubs, the CYM (Christian Youth Movement) & Future Ambassador's Society. She is also Chaplain of the Interact club and a member of the Debating club. As if these clubs don't keep her busy enough, Ilieana also writes for the school's newspaper.

Before this interview, I had never heard about the Future Ambassadors Club, hence, I wanted to know more about it. According to Ilieana, the Future Ambassadors Club challenges youths to think analytically and use their problem solving abilities. They read local and international news and try to come up with solutions to the problems they find. To join this club, your grade point average has to be 3.0, or above. You also need two letters of recommendation one from a pastor and another from any upstanding member of the community.

Ilieana's future plans including attending college and studying interior design. She has a creative flair and can make a thing of beauty out of something as simple as a paper plate or lollipop sticks. When asked what makes her happy Ilieana's reply was, "probably designing. I like doing anything creative."
What keeps you from making some of the negative choices so many young ladies make?
"Probably having a set mind. Also choosing the right friends. I don't really hang out with girls who are into anything negative."

If you had a message to tell young ladies what would it be?
Don't let anyone influence you negatively. If you know something is wrong don't let anyone pressure you into doing it
