"My sister is so smart! "
"My cousin is the best!"
"She is the nicest person."
" She is a great role model. She plays the clarinet, do you
know she won the National Arts Festival last year?"
Ten-year-olds Leslie and Sessilly couldn't say enough about their
16 years old sister and cousin. I was very intrigued by what they
said about her. In fact I decided then and there that this young
lady had to be this issue's spotlighted teen.
Dielyah Barr is a 16-year-old eleventh grade student.
She attends Freeport Anglican High School where she is an excellent
student. She is not afraid of new experiences and has recently
applied to be a part of the exchange student program. She has
already been interviewed and is now awaiting a reply. If she's
accepted into the program Dielyah will spend her entire 12th grade
year abroad. She feels that it would be an opportunity to experience
different cultures and lifestyles and that the experience will
give her a broader view of the world.
"If I'm accepted it won't affect my studies," she
said. "I'm taking my BGCSE this year and I will be finished
with my high school courses by the end of this school year. Should
I be here next school year," she continued, I will
be doing college level courses in Math, English and Biology."(Way
to go Dielyah!).
Dielyah plans to study Oncology, one of her goals is to help find
a cure for cancer. "I'm fascinated by the medical field
in general," she said, however I feel that I can help
a lot of people in the field of Oncology.
This student indeed has her priorities straight. Although she
use to be involved in Sports and clubs she has put most of her
extra curricular activities aside this year to concentrate on
academics.
"I have decided that my twelfth grade year is going to
be fun," she said, "so I have to work hard this year."
She has not put everything aside however, she is the vice president
of the Christian Youth Movement (CYM) at her school. She also
fills in as a substitute Sunday school Teacher at her church when
necessary.
This teen's advice to other teens is "set goals for
yourself and stay focused on them in order to reach them."
