Most young people think they are invincible and that nothing can ever happen to them. However, this is not so. Young people die and also get hurt! Hence, you must use wisdom and protect yourselves.

Times are changing and criminal activity is on the rise we can see the shattering effects on both the local and international news. Consequently, here is some advice on how you can be safe and not become a victim of a violent crime.

Avoid short- cuts on the way home from school. Also avoid dark deserted areas at night. In fact if possible go out in groups.

Be alert at all times and be aware of what is going on in the environment you are in. You never know who may be observing your movements.

If you're home be careful!. Lock your doors and also, use a peephole to identify people before opening doors.

Never hitch-hike or accept rides from people you don't know.

In the event of an attack, attract the attention of others by screaming as loud as you can. You can also pretend to faint, cry, act insane…whatever it takes, your motivation is simply to get away unharmed. If nothing else works try to talk the attacker out of it. Even telling him you have an STD (sexually transmitted disease) might scare him off.

God forbid, if you are ever raped, report the rape immediately and go to the hospital to be examined. Seek counseling as well and remember, you are not to be blamed.
