The Name Game

by Bernadine J. McIntosh

A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches(Proverbs 22:1)

Whats in a name? Oh, Its just something to distinguish you from everyone else around you. Theres nothing special about a name, right? Wrong!

Lately Ive been watching with interest the unfolding events of the Kobe Bryant sexual assault case. Anyone who is a L. A. Laker fan or simply watch the news would be aware that Kobe Bryant one of the Lakers star player has been charged with sexual assault. In the days following the newsbreak many of Kobes teammates and those who know him spoke publicly in support his support, citing many positive things about him and referring to his previous clean-cut image and good name.

Kobe denied the rape charge but admitted to having consensual sex with his accuser, which mean hes admitted to being an adulterer. Adultery may seem like the least of two evils, as it doesnt come with a prison term. However, Kobes clean-cut, boy next-door image and good name is forever damaged and opened to speculation. Guilty or innocent his name will always be associated with this scandal.

Whats in a name? Well, ask the young lady who has gotten a bad name around school because of bad choices. Whats in a name? Ask the young lady who has had her name ruined because of unfounded gossip. Whats in a name? I dare say a whole lot, especially when its your name.

At this moment Im sure that Kobe would give anything to relive that moment and make a different choice. However its too late, everyone has 20/20 hindsight but we cant change the past. Fortunately, its not too late for you. Think before you act. A good name is not something to play with. Guard your reputation and good name like you would the most priceless of jewels, because it is.
