Keep the Dream Alive

by B. McIntosh

Kim was in her final few months of high school and was all excited about going to college. She had big plans for the future and couldn't wait for graduation. However, the scholarship she was expecting to receive went to someone else. This caused Kim to give up on her dreams. She couldn't see anyway she could possibly accomplish them.

Have you ever been excited about some dream you had for the future? Maybe your dream was to go to college, have a great career. Maybe you wanted to become a supermodel, singer, movie star …

At one point you may have had many dreams but now it seems to you as if your dreams are too big and you can never achieve them. This may have caused you to lose interest, to stop dreaming. However, I say to you young ladies, DARE TO DREAM! It costs you nothing to dream. Webster's dictionary defines the word dream as "a fond hope"

Our dreams are what give us hope for the future. Without dreams we are not fully alive and there is no expectation of a better tomorrow after a terrible today. Without dreams the future may seem dark and depressing, it may seem as if there is nothing to live for. After all, if there is no hope of life getting better why even bother to try?

However, I'd like to encourage all you young ladies to continue to dream. Write your dreams down. Share them with your best friend… Every successful person started out with a dream. But, they are only living their dreams because they didn't give up. You are the only one who can limit your imagination.

I was inspired by the poem in the last issue, written by 15-year-old Raquel Higgs. Her poem reminds you to believe in yourself! It's always nice to have other people believe in you but ultimately you have to believe in you. Yes, we believe in you, we will cheer for you always, we will be there for you but you have to believe in yourself. Do not allow yourself to stop dreaming and don't you dare let your dreams die!
