A True Friend

By an anonymous teen, age 16 N.Y

One night a few of my friends and I went to a party that was supposed to be the best party of the summer. We were for sure going to have a great time. We started off with some drinks. I didnt think it would be that big of a deal. I was just going to have one drink to be with the crowd. After my first drink I told them that I didnt want anymore. My friends that I thought were "true" keep pressuring me to drink more. So yeah I had a few more because peer pressure these days is hard to ignore.

By the end of the night I was pretty drunk and didnt really know what was going on. Some of the "cool guys" had some drugs. They wanted to know if I wanted a "hit" Even though I was drunk I still knew that drugs are not my kind of thing and they can even kill me. One of my best friends kept saying, "Just do it! It will be fun! Come on dont be a baby!" So I took a "hit." Thats really all I can remember from that night, one of the worst nights of my life. I realized the next day that true friends wouldnt pressure you to do things that you dont want to do.

A true friend accepts you for who you are and not who they want you to be. They believe in you, forgive you for the mistakes you make. They never judge you and they give you support when you need it. I thought I had a few "true friends" but since that experience I realized that they are just not the kind of people that I want to hang out with

Take my advice, dont give in to peer pressure. You just have to remember that those people that are trying to get you to do things that you dont want to do are not your true friends. If you do choose to give in to peer pressure just remember that if you give in there will always be something else that they will pressure you to do. Dont let other peoples opinions change you. Giving into peer pressure just once may change your life forever. Saying no and meaning it may cause them to stop and you will gain your self-respect and theirs because of it.
