After the Edo Period

-- The first response to the second invasion of alien culture into Japan was open-hearted acceptance, and in 1876 the Technological Art School was opened, employing Italian instructors to teach Western methods.

-- The second reaction was a swing in the opposite direction spearheaded by Okakura Kakuzo and the American Ernest Fenollosa, who encouraged japanese artists to retain traditional themes and techniques.

-- The result of this was the development of two artistic theories, the Yoga(Western-style painting) and Nihonoga(Japanese painting).  These categories remain valid to the present day.
