| Ship launched Surface to Air Missiles: Terrier AN/RIM-2 was the first member of the "3-T" SAM systems in the USN. Cruiser and DLG sized ships. Ships equipped were: Boston class, Cleveland flag ship retrofits, Coontz class DLG (later DDG), Leahy class DLG (later CG), USS Bainbridge DLGN (later CGN), USS Long Beach CGN-9, some Kitty Hawk CV, Belknap class DLG (later CG), USS Truxtun DLGN (later CGN). RIM-2A (ex-SAM-N-7 BW-0) Early Beam Riding Wing controled version of Terrier. RIM-2B (ex-SAM-N-7 BW-1) Improved version of RIM-2A. RIM-2C (ex-SAM-N-7 BT-3) Beam Riding Terrier introducing tail control. RIM-2D (ex-SAM-N-7 BT-3A/-3A(N)) Improved version of RIM-2C with nuclear option. RIM-2E (ex-SAM-N-7 HT-3) First Terrier with homing. RIM-2F Late Terrier version named "Homing Terrier Retrofit". Mostly rebuilt earlier versions. Talos AN/RIM-8 was another of the "3-T" SAM systems. This was a very large missile. They were ramjet propelled and reliant on vacume tube technology. The entire system was hugh and could be fit only on cruisers. The Missiles were fit only to the USS Long Beach CGN, the Albany class CG, and a few Cleveland class CG conversions. RIM-8A (ex-SAM-N-6b) Beam Riding with semi-active terminal homing. RIM-8B (ex-SAM-N-bW) RIM-8A with Nuclear warhead, no terminal homing. RIM-8C (ex-SAM-N-6b1) Improved version RIM-8D (ex-SAM-N-6bW1) Nuclear armed RIM-8C. RIM-8E (ex-SAM-N-6c1) Unified Talos. Talos with nuclear option. RIM-8F (ex-SAM-N-6b1 CW) CW Homing version of Unified Talos RIM-8G Improved beam riding Talos (rebuilds of earlier beam riding versions) RIM-8J Improved version with semi-active homing. Tartar AN/RIM-24 the final "3-T" missile was designed for destroyer sized ships. Before the unified designation system it was refered to as missile Mk15. RIM-24A (ex-Missile Mk15) was the first Tartar. This missile was optically targeted. RIM-24B Improved Tartar, radar targeted. RIM-24C Tartar Relibility Improvement Program. Tartar version with improved performance. Sea Sparrow AN/RIM-7E.This missile is a surface launched version of the AIM-7E air to air missile. Used as part of the basic point defense missile system (BPDMS). This missile was optically targeted. RIM-7E Sea Sparrow. The Typhon system. The "3-T" systems were determined to be vulnerable to saturation attacks in the late 1950s. The new system was intended to be standardized With versions for cruisers and destroyers. There would be a long range version to replace Talos, and a medium ranged version to replace tartar. The system would be based around the AN/SPG-59 radar. The system's development dragged to a halt because of mounting technical roadblocks. The system was canceled and a new smaller restructered program was started. The new system would grow in to the Aegis system. The Standard Missile Family The standard missile is the next generation of Navy SAMs. New technology enabled the standard missiles medium range missile variant to be the same size as the Tartar missile, and its Extended Range variant was the same size as the Terrier. Missiles the same size as the Talos were not considered because the large size made them impractical as they could be fitted to only cruiser sized vessels. The standard missile was designed to replace the 3-T systems missiles. The medium range version would be retrofitted to Tartar launchers and the extended range version to Terrier launchers. Talos would no longer be supported. Later an extended range version would be developed for the Mk41 veltical launch system. The second generation standard missile, the SM-2, was developed specifically for the Aegis system.
