Formerly
San Jose Repertory Company, the theater was founded in 1980 by Santa Clara
County resident James Reber. With assistance from the San Jose Fine Arts
Commission, the company produced its first season at the 537-seat Montgomery
Theater in 1981. Shortly thereafter, the subscription base skyrocketed, making
it one of the fastest growing theatres in the United States. With Berkeley
Repertory Theatre and Eureka Theatre, in 1986, the Rep produced Emily Mann's Execution
of Justice and burst into the national spotlight when the production was
featured on the cover of American Theatre Magazine. In November 1997 the Rep opened its stunning new theater facility
at 101 Paseo de San Antonio. The Redevelopment Agency of the City of San Jose
and the Rep formed a partnership to bring this dream to reality. Its dramatic
architectural design and intimate auditorium allow for excellent acoustics and
sight lines for theatregoers. The new facility is the permanent home of San
Jose Repertory Theatre -allowing the company to expand its artistic vision and
scope.
