The members of As the Crow Flies met over a period of two years. It was started by Denver in his junior year. He had been the rhythm guitarist forThe Yellow Pages, which disbanded in 2002 due to lack of interest. Denver had hated their slack-off attitude, and was glad for a chance to seriously pursue a music carreer. He was determined to make it big as a rock star, but needed more than himself to get there.
In early 2003, Denver met the easily angered drummer Victor in afterschool detention. They two hit it off - and each other - and started a new band called Black Crow. They were eventually joined by a choir-boy named Jason Lee. However, after much arguments, Jason left Black Crow and they were without a singer. Despite the failures of both his bands, Denver didn't give up hope.
In the summer of 2003, Victor recruited his cousin Akemi Hamakawa as their singer and bassist when she moved to their town.. She got them a decent fanbase with her husky voice and strange apperances, but Black Crow still felt empty. They were more of a visual band, and their music didn't matter so much.
Finally, on Christmas day, 2003, Denver found his savior angel. He was playing the acoustic guitar and singing in the town square, sitting on the fountain. In front of him was a tophat which people were throwing coins into. His name was Ex Azele, and he was a freshman from Denver's school. After a little persuading and bribery (read as: a latte from Starbucks), Ex agreed to listen to Black Crow and see if he wanted to join. He very much liked what he heard, but the band liked him even more. His sugar-coated wide-ranged terrifying voice was just what they needed
Ex then became the newly renamed As the Crow Flies lead singer and rhythm guitarist. Akemi happily resided from singing and devoted herself to playing the bass. Denver finally was able to be lead guitar, and Victor accompanied them on drums. Now, in summer 2004, AtCF has their one indie CD out and plays shows almost every other weekend for their ever growing fanbase in Michigan.
