History:
Miatala Hawkchaser was born December 24th, 1990 on Nez Perce reservation land in Lenore, Idaho. Within their tribe, psionic mutations had existed for generations. However, due to a dwindling population the manifestations of these special abilities had all but ceased. Tala's mother Jessica had been born with the hope that she would be the one to carry on this power to the next generation, but even after puberty, there was no mutation present. Jessica was a unstable woman to begin with, and her apparent 'failure' made her turn her back on her own people and family. She became an outcast within the reservation. As an adult, Jessica fell for an English-born reseacher working with the tribe. The man left before he could ever learn that he was to be a father.
Jessica suffered from severe post-partum depression almost immediately. She took her newborn out into the woods and left her there to die. The infant was found a day later, alive and well thanks to the attention of a pair of female wolves who had apparently kept her warm and safe in that time. The elders proclaimed it was a sign and gave her the name Miatala, which translates roughly to 'the power of the wolf'. The tribe began treating her as their Golden Child..which only caused to make her mother resent her more.
By the time Miatala was five, her mother was determined to keep her from whatever 'destiny' the tribe had planned for her. She moved to New York with her daughter, found a small apartment and gave her an 'English' name: Michelle Hawker. Finally alone, Jessica was able to act out the hate born from the attention her daughter recieved. Jessica was severely abusive, both mentally and physically. Michelle was forced to suffer pain and indignation at her mother's hands. Not long after the move, Jessica became active with an anti-meta group, set to distroy those who were 'different'.
When Michelle's powers manifested shortly after her sixteenth birthday, Michelle knew she could no longer risk living at home. One night, she packed a small bunch of her personal possessions and necessities and left. She wandered the streets for several weeks before meeting a seemingly kind man. He took her in. Fed her. Cleaned her up. Offered to get her into an excellent school and give her a place to live all in exchange for a little help keeping the house up. It seemed like an idea situation. A dream come true.
Shortly after she enrolled in high school, she began dating a meta named Thomas Chandler. The man who'd taken her in, however, seemed almost jealous of Michelle's love. Benedict was seven years her senior. A grown man, and far from Michelle's cup of tea. Still, this living situation was tolerable despite the changes she was seeing in Benedict. Longevity and luck were not on their side, though. After nearly a year, the couple broke up. Not long after Michelle began to date her good friend, Etienne Badeau, a fellow empath. Graduation was fast approaching. Now an adult, Benedict had cut Michelle loose and allowed her to leave. Everything seemed to be looking up once again. Within a month, things soured. Michelle discovered she was pregnant. Tien's father passed away. Tom was pulled back into the picture. Things seemed irreparable for all involved.
The birth of Michelle's son, Jacob, changed all that. The group of teenagers were suddenly thrust into adult roles, and they responded beautifully. Michelle was in love with her new baby, and fully dedicated to him. Swearing he'd never have to suffer the things she did as a child. Tien decided to step up and repair his relationship with Michelle, vowing to care for both her and baby Jake. Thomas promised he'd be there to support the young family however he could.
Benedict, however, was less than excited. He lashed out at the family, first kidnapping Jacob for a week before returning him unharmed. When it became known who had done it, Benedict pointed out how vunerable Michelle's family was. In exchange for their protection, Michelle began to 'work' for him again. She was forced to lie to her now-fiancee about where she worked. She pulled money from her savings account to make it appear that she was being paid. And, of course..she became subject to Benedict's every whim. After nearly a year of servitude, Benedict once again turned her loose. Michelle was thankful to be away, but she didn't realize the damage that had already been done.
The years that followed proved easier. When Tien turned twenty-one, he recieved a large payment from the trust fund his late father had set up for him. Michelle was able to pick up a real job training horses while Tien went to college and worked at a doctor's office. Michelle was also able to persue her pet cause, fighting for the rights of metas. Even today her name is still known among a few small circles. Tien and Michelle were eventually blessed with a second child, Nathalie. It soon became obviously that their daughter was..different. Tien used his connections in the medical field to provide the best diagnostics and treatments available. Despite their hardships..the family was happy.
Until one night, when Michelle recieved a call. Someone had a tip for her about the movement. While she'd backed further away from the meta rights cause as her children grew, she did her best to remain active from the sidelines. Naturally, she had to follow this tip. However..Michelle had not planned on an ambush. Eight men were waiting for her. All heavily armed. Michelle didn't even have the chance to draw her weapon.
There are many accounts of what happens after death. Michelle's soul ended up in the Deadlands, surrounding by other mourning, lost, incomplete souls. She wandered there for some time. Always trying to find a way back to her family. Always searching for a way back into the mortal coil. She attempted to contact her loved ones. Reach out to them. Sometimes it worked. Usually it didn't. Eventually, though, Michelle was offered a second chance. Jamie Bishop, a Speaker of the Dead found her. She needed a strong guide to lead a group of metas to the source of a sudden rising of zombies. Michelle agreed without hesitation to be their guide. Once they'd found the source, they required something to focus their energy to, something to use as a cannon. Michelle volunteered for that as well. She longed for a purpose, a reason, a chance. When the battle was over, the zombies were gone. As were several people of the team she'd been assisting. However..Michelle was back. It was unclear if life was a gift, a thank-you from the Deadlands or a side effect of the energy she's absorbed, but she was back in her mortal form. Her body the same as it had been the night before her murder. Soon she was reunited with her family and yet again..things were as they should have been.
Of course, history repeats itself. Benedict returned to her life via a daughter she didn't even know she had, Anita St. James. The fateful meeting left her family devastated, and her husband dead. Michelle's been left to hold the family together now. To pick up and repair the broken lives of those she loves, without allowing herself to slip. She knows her journey will continue to be difficult, but she also knows that at very least..she's home.
