Kiowa Roadrunner

KIC

The KIC (Kiowa Indian Council) consists of the Kiowa tribal membership, as described in the Kiowa Constitution. This section will be dedicated to sharing highlights from the KIC meetings. This will include supporting documents for some of the meeting topics. KIC meetings are held weekly and open to all tribal members and their guests.

Kiowa Tribal elections will be held on Saturday, July 7, 2001.  GET OUT AND VOTE!!

The schedule further down this page is how the election is supposed to go, according to the Kiowa Constitution, but…

First there was a recall on Brenda Myers, Vice-Chairwoman.  You see, she actually spoke up whenever a hare-brained scheme was presented at a Kiowa Business Committee meeting.  She got in their way.  This is how they got rid of her.  They decided to recall her on bogus charges.  This way she could not run for another term and continue to question their behavior.

In the meantime, when Chairman Horse was served with two recall notices, the KBC decided that one was not valid, and that one would be put on hold until after the election.  The decision to put the recall  on hold was not conveyed to the person submitting the recall until he showed up at the next KBC meeting to find out the status, long after the 10-day notice limit had gone by.

It has come to the attention of the Roadrunner that at the KBC meeting just held on May 5, 2001, there were many comments made and some discussion among the KBC members that the election needs to be postponed.  Their reason is unclear.  One might conclude that they are worried about the results of the election?  Hey, KBC!  Let's get on with tribal business for a change and let the people, the KIC, govern the tribe as should be!

EDITORIAL

A group of KIC hosted an open forum for the candidates of this election to present their platforms, scheduled for Thursday, June 28th.  The local paper was called on Tuesday to have it listed.  On Wednesday morning this editor received two phone messages from Gene Quetone.  Now, this editor has never been introduced to this man, let alone able to pick him out of a roomful of people.  So, how did he know who to call about the meeting, considering that the paper had not even been distributed yet?

There are moles everywhere.  Mr. Quetone himself has been recalled from office with the Kiowa Tribe, yet he is involved in every aspect of Billy Evans Horse's tribal business that this editor has witnessed.

This editor returned his call, only to leave a message.  Later that day we did finally have a telephone conversation where this editor reassured Mr. Quetone that the forum was going to be a non-partisan, open-to-all candidates format.  At this point, as if it was needed, Mr. Quetone gave his permission for our group to hold our meeting.  And, all of a sudden, he states that there is going to be another such meeting the following night at the same location.  Well, that's news to the rest of the world.  The two candidates I was able to reach right away had no idea that a candidate's meeting was going to be held on Friday, June 29th.  They had not received so much as a phone call informing them.

This is just another fine example of thinly veiled threats and oppressive actions made by those who have no business in Kiowa business.  These people have violated the KIC's civil rights in more ways than can be imagined.

Time for a change KIC.  There are several thousand of you eligible to vote.  Why is it that each election has only 150-250 of you showing up to cast your ballot?  Get your apathetic rear-ends off that couch and make a difference!  Everybody is crying around about how awful things are for the tribe, that you'll never get off high-risk status.  You are exactly right, because you choose to do nothing about it.  Things will continue to be the same as it has been for the last twenty years, as long as you  continue to do nothing.  Stand up and be counted.  Oh no, you say, I don't get involved in politics.

What are you afraid of?

This item to the right is a scanned image of the caricature created as a direct result of a decision made by Kiowa Business Committee members, at the February KBC meeting, to find out who is creating and publishing the Coyote.  It was decided through motion and second with an approving vote that the $500.00 reward money is to paid out of the Tribal Tax Commission funds.  This is really an appropriate tribal expense? Whatever happened to free speech?
