'THE
SENTINEL' WORLD
We all know the story line of the sentinel - a stone face detective with hyper senses and a young enthusiastic Anthropologist that follows him around, helping him with his senses and as time goes by, becomes his best friend.
Yes, it is about friendship - it's about a friendship of two men that are completely different, but in the same breath are the same. It's about two men that learn to trust each other and share a strong bond that's deeper than anyone can understand. When it all begins, it's only a dependable bond - one is the second's guide and the latest is "the Holy Grail" of the first. They need each other and have to put up with one another, each one for his own reasons. But soon enough, through this bond, they learn to love and respect each other and become best friends.
At first (and second) look Jim and Blair are completely different and have nothing in common. The first is a cop, a former military man who wouldn't know how to express his feelings even if his life depended on it. A man who likes everything to be in order and sees the world as good guys - bad guys. The second is a young anthropologist who sees the best in every person, can't stand to even hold a gun and can't understand why the world is so corrupted and why people would want to hurt others. The man who wears his heart on his sleeve and gets into a roller coaster of feelings from pretty much everything. What can they possibly have in common?
True enough, they are different, but those differences only make their partnership stronger. One brings in the "down to earth" approach and the other brings the "use your heart" when it's needed (which is usually the case). But if we look deep down into their souls we'll find things that aren't obvious to the outside observer. Although Jim may look like a cold person on the outside, the fact that he doesn't know how to express his feelings doesn't mean that he doesn't have them. He does have feelings and as time goes by he learns how to reveal them (thanks to Blair if you ask me). Deep down inside Jim is actually a lonely man who's too afraid to trust people with his feelings and his true self. He only seeks for someone who will understand him and be the caring family that he almost never had. Blair on the other hand is a person that has no troubles when it comes to expressing his feelings and truth be told, most of the time he gets into troubles because he let's them lead the way. It is when we look into Blair's soul that we find the thing that he and Jim share in common - just like Jim, Blair is also looking for a family. Traveling with his "free spirit" mother all over the world might have giving Blair a unique childhood that shaped his personality into the wonderful person that he is today, but it also took away from him the normal family life and the feeling of stability. He does love his mother very much but she's not there for him most of the time. He is on his own with no family to turn to for support.
It may have started as a simple "give and take" partnership, but the search for stability and family love led Blair and Jim to the strong friendship and unique bond that they share. Sentinel stuff or no sentinel stuff - they will stay together forever.
