A
FRIENDSHIP IN THE CHAINS
OF TIME
The moments that made the difference

Jim: And who the hell are you, anyway?
Blair: Me, I'm no one. But this man, he is. He's the only one who can truly help you.
![]()
Blair: Okay, um...my name is Blair Sandburg. And I'm working on my doctorate in Anthropology and you just may be the living embodiment of my field of study. If I'm correct, Detective Ellison, you're a behavioral throwback to a pre-civilized breed of man.
Jim: Are you out of your mind? You dragged me all the way over here to tell me I'm some sort of caveman?
![]()
Jim: Let's get out of here before I gotta answer a lot of questions. Let's go.
Blair: Let's? As in we? Oh, great, I've got some really specific ideas on how we can proceed here.
![]()
Joel: Wait a minute. You know this guy?
Jim: Yeah. My new partner.
![]()
Jim: Whoa, whoa, whoa. Stop right there, Chief.
Blair: Yeah, I know. I'm never to refer to us as partners.
Jim: That's right.
Blair: I'm strictly the observer.
![]()
Jim: From now on when I tell you to do something, you do it; when I tell you to say something, you say it, the way I tell you to say it, okay? Are we clear?
Blair: Yes, we're clear.
![]()
Simon: It's okay, guys. He's on our team!
Blair: Did you say I was on your team?
Simon: Strictly as an observer.
![]()
Blair: Jim, one week. One week, and I promise, I promise, we'll be out of your hair. Come on. One week, man.
Jim: All right, look... One week.
![]()
Blair: You know, the Chinese believe when you save a man's life you become his blessed protector and it's your duty to do that for the rest of your life.
![]()
Blair: Well, actually, I've already decided not to go. This sentinel thing... You know, it's more than just a research project. Uh... it's about friendship. I just didn't get it before.
![]()
Jim: Now I'm ready for the really big challenge.
Blair: What's that?
Jim: Housebreaking you. We got a couple rules around the house that we're gong to attend to.
![]()
Jim: Blair, come on. Try it. Trust me. You can save the world here. Come on.
Blair: I don't think that's gonna work here, Jim.
Jim: Come on, give me the gun. Blair.
![]()
Wilkenson: What the hell is the matter with him?
Simon: Well, Mr. Wilkenson, I'll tell you. That's his friend in there and if you cared half as much for your daughter, maybe this whole thing would be over.
![]()
Jim: He wants to know if you're gonna be my spiritual guide in the city.
Blair: Tell him that I learn from him. He learns from me. It's more like a partnership.
![]()
Blair: What about you? You sure as hell don't need me if you don't have sentinel abilities.
Jim: What? Were you worried you're not going to complete your dissertation?
Blair: Come on, Jim. I got enough information for ten dissertations. I could have finished months ago.
Jim: So, you've been stalling?
Blair: Yeah. You know, I mean, what do you expect? For me to just jump back into my academic life? Come on -- that would be like jumping off a roller coaster and spending the rest of my life on a merry-go-round.
![]()
Blair: You read my dissertation. Jim, I don't believe you. I asked you not to do that!
Jim: After I let you stay at my place. I get you a job at the department. I mean you don't have enough data you got to go digging into my ex-wife's life?
Blair: The only reason that I talked to Carolyn is cause she's the only one how knows you better that I do.
![]()
Blair: Look, we have three years of our lives invested in this thing and I'm not going to start shading any of it because you're starting to feel a little threatened.
Jim: Threatened by you? I don't think so, Chief.
Blair: What else do you call it?
Jim: I call it a violation of friendship and trust.
![]()
Blair: So, what do you want to do? Just want to call it quits? Ah, maybe you're right. Maybe I've, uh...lost my objectivity. I'll tell you what -- I'd rather just be friends. So why don't I go destroy my notes? How about that?
![]()
Blair: Hey, wait a minute. Jim, we just got to sit down and we got to talk about what's going on with you.
Jim: I don't want to talk about it. I don't want to analyze it. I just need you out of here by the time I get back.
![]()
Blair: Look, Jim, I just wanted you to know I realize I was wrong for not telling you about Alex. I was only thinking about myself and about my work and somewhere along the line, I lost track of my friend.
Jim: Well, Chief, I don't know what you want me to say. I don't know if I can get past this. To me, it was a real breach of trust and that struck really deep with me.
![]()
Jim: Wait, whoa, whoa, whoa. I know who I am, okay? I don't need you or anybody else to help me define that. Is that clear? Maybe it's just better if you finish your dissertation or doctorate writing about somebody else.
Blair: That's crazy. I know I made a mistake, but I'm willing to do whatever it takes to get past this, but if you got to hang on to it -- you know where to find me.
![]()
Simon: Jim!
Jim: No! No! He's alive!
Simon: He's gone!
Jim: No!
![]()
Jim: You said this Sid is throwing a lot of money in your face, right?
Blair: Yeah.
Jim: All right, just to generate publicity for the sake of generating publicity without even having a deal because he wants to, what toss it, uh, in your face, like a dangling carrot?
Blair: Wait a minute, wait a minute. Stop. What are you trying to say, I was part of this from the start? You think that's what I'm about?
![]()
Blair: No, look, don't you try to run some interrogation on me. You're not going to find some weak spot in me, all right? Look, I'm not a perp. I'm your friend.
![]()
Jim: I just want to go back to the way things were.
Blair: You can't just turn it off.
Jim: Sure, I can. There's got to be some way for me to let them go dormant. Some meditation you can give me or I can find somewhere to tune out and turn all this off. I'm just done with it.
Blair: That's not who you are.
Jim: Well, you tell me who I am, then 'cause I have no idea. At one point, I had a reputation of being a pretty decent cop. Now, people look at me and they-they perceive me as some goofball comic book character.
![]()
Jim: Captain, before we hear back from the review board or the brass tells us to go pack our bags, I'd like to go back to things the way they were before Sandburg, when I worked alone.
Simon: You talk to Blair about this?
Jim: It's not his call, Captain. This is my decision. His ride is over. I want to go back to being a cop, just a regular cop. And with this sentinel thing hanging over us, it's always right there and I...I'm tired of it. I just want out.
![]()
Blair: If it's taught me one thing, it's taught me that Jim is right. I got it all. I got it all right here. The brass ring. And now I know what to do. So why don't you go call Sid?
![]()
Blair: However, my desire to impress both my peers and the world at large drove me to an immoral and unethical act. My thesis "The Sentinel" is a fraud. While my paper does quote ancient source material, the documentation proving that James Ellison...actually possesses hyper-senses is fraudulent.
![]()
Jim: This self-deprecation don't suit you, you know. You might have been just an observer, but you were the best cop I've ever met and the best partner I could have ever asked for. You've been a great friend and you've pulled me through some pretty weird stuff.
![]()
Jim: You're, uh, you're finished in this department, Chief.
Blair: Yeah well, I-I sort of...well, I figured that.
Jim: As an observer.
Blair: This is, uh... what is this? This is a detective badge. What's going on? I don't deserve this.
Simon: No, you don't, at least not until you go to the Police Academy and complete firearms training. And if you do, Detective Ellison is looking for a permanent official partner.
