White-Tailed Deer
What's that smell? Not a newborn white-tailed deer, that's for sure! Did you know that fawns are scentless for the first few days of life? It's nature's way of helping defenseless young animals from being found by predators, such as wolves and bobcats.
Nature has given whitetails other survival skills, too. The male deer, or buck, rubs his antlers against trees to mark his territory. He also uses them to fight with other bucks--winner gets the dough...er, make that doe!
One of his best tools is his tail. When frightened, he'll make a fast getaway while raising his tail like a flag. This built-in alarm system warns other deer that danger is near.
