Hippopotamus

Imagine that you're a 4,000-pound, 12-foot-long barrel-shaped mammal with almost no hair and sensitive skin. How are you supposed to keep your delicate self from being baked by the hot African sun? The answer is BATHS--and lots of them!

Hippopotamuses keep their skin in tip-top condition by chillin' out underwater. They wallow in lakes and rivers until they're covered in mud, which keeps them cool and conditions their skin. These massive mammals also secrete an oily pink liquid that offers major sun protection. Sure beats stocking up on suntan lotion!

When nightfall comes, hippopotamuses are ready to party--or at least have some really good grub. But we're not talking a quick bite to eat--hungry hippos can scarf down nearly 100 pounds of grass, fruit and other vegetation in one evening.
