Eastern Hognose Snake

One look at the Eastern hognose snake and you'll see why this shy, sly guy got his name. Using his upturned snout like a built-in shovel, he digs and burrows into the soil, foraging for food. Throughout his range in the sandy fields and woodland meadows across the Eastern United States, this snake is one mellow fellow--well, at least most of the time.

Whew, was that a close call! As soon as he's sure that the raccoon has left the scene, the Eastern hognose flips back over and heads for safer turf. And could that be a Fowler's toad he spies along the way? LUNCHTIME!
