| Info:: Acrylic on canvas board, 8"x10", July 25 2004 (Alla Prima) The first picture I painted (on the Sunday), sitting on the dock. It was a marvelous sunny day, I did the whole thing in about 2 hours. The reflections, the light, the shapes of the tree trunks were inspiring. I don't really sketch anything out in pencil any more, I like to use a fairly liquid mixture of matte medium & Payne's Gray to outline the main features. Because acrylic dries so fast I can paint over quickly (without "bleeding" the colours). I like to leave some of the gray showing through (see the tops of the trees). I have a friend (Ron Gang in Israel), who likes to use the complimentary colour for an outline (he would use a red in this case to go with the green), I will have to try that sometime. I used transparent washes of Phatalocyanine Blue & Windsor Violet (mixed with lots of matte medium), to deepen the darklights & provide rich shadows.I don't have a "black". Overall I'm pleased with this picture, I like the "free" feeling to the brushwork & the interpaly of the trees provides a nice composition. Didn't spend much time on the clouds, but they're not really the centre of intrerest. I use acrylics, because they dry fast & suit my style of painting "live" & painting quickly. If I tried this pic with oils I would probably have ended up with "mud". (whew, I talk a lot......... -G-) |
