FENDER STRATOCASTER
CLOTH WIRE
From the 50's to about 1968 Fender used Cloth wiring as standard on Stratocaster and Telecaster models (others also).  Then in late 1968 (after CBS) they switched to using Teflon coated PVC plastic wire from 1968 to present (except for a few select Custom shop and special  models).  It's been debated that the original cloth wire adds more warmth to the sound than the Teflon wire. It's up to your judgement for sound  and personal preference which one your like better.

Some of the cloth wire out there is not upto the spec.. Here is my experience and hopefully it will save you some time. I ordered some cloth wiring  that came in a "vintage parts kit" like many that are mass-produced.  The wire was cloth, but didn't have the original waxed coating that most of the 60's Fender wire had and seemed to be AWG #20, instead of AWG #22.

If your like me,  you would perfer to  have it be as close to the original as possible.  The Three companies I've found are good sources for that.  One is ACME Guitar Works in Delaware, and the other is New Sensor Corp/Sovtek in NY, both have sourced the original manufacture that supplied Fender (AWG# 22 Size). New Sensor/Sovtek sells it in 10FT increments and by the spool. ACME's  wire has one extra feature that it comes pre-tinned (solder already applied to the entire wire length) for easier soldering to terminals, they sell it in wiring kits and by the foot. ACME also has the Teflon Coated PVC wire availible for your 70's-present strat's.  Angela Instruments is also a source for the vintage cloth wire.
