Small Red-eyed Damselfly + 2 pairs West Pool, 1 Brown Argus nectaring on Fleabane on Sweet Mead (1st record for the site), a female Southern Hawker (1st record for the site) and 6 Emerald Damselfly Manifold Ditch west of the flyover and 4 Emerald Damselfy + 1 pair east of the flyover, 3 Snipe flushed from Stockade Mead ditch

Small Red-eyed Damselfly on northeast corner of West Pool and 7 Emerald Damselfly in Manifold Ditch, east of flyover

2nd August - 1 Emerald Damselfly New River

1st August - The first ever King's Mead record of the
Small Red-eyed Damselfly Erythromma viridulum, bringing the total of dragonfly species recorded at King's Mead to 17. See the Herts Dragonfly Group website for more details of this damselfly that was recorded in the UK for the first time in 1999.

23rd July - A good day for butterflies with 15 species recorded including 10 Green-veined White, 46 Small White, 3 Large White, 2 Comma, 1 Red Admiral, 1 Painted lady, 10 Small Tortoiseshell, 1 Holly Blue, 6 Peacock, 3 Ringlet, 62 Meadow Brown, 60 Gatekeeper, 55 Small Skipper, 4 Essex Skipper and 1 Small Copper

16th July -  1 Emerald Damselfly Manifold Ditch, 2 Essex Skipper (1 King's Mead, 1 Sweet Mead)

15th July - 120 Swift, 10 Common Tern

13th July - 10 Common Tern, 1 Stock Dove, 1 pair Bullfinch

10th July - 1 Bullfinch, 200 Lapwing

3rd July -
1 Grass Snake Park Mead, 1 Little Ringed Plover, 150 Banded Demoiselle Sweet Mead

2nd July - 2 Little Ringed Plover, 1 Greenshank, 1 pair Bullfinch, 1 pair of Spotted Flycatcher on fence by Chadwell Spring hawking freshly emerged Ruddy and Common Darters

25th June - 2 Little Ringed Plover, 1 Common Sandpiper, 1 Stock Dove, 1 pair Bullfinch and an Emperor Dragonfly catching and eating a Small Tortoiseshell butterfly

20th June - First Ruddy Darter in Manifold Ditch

18th June - 2 Little Ringed Plover, 1 Stock Dove, 9 Heron

13th June -  4 Hairy Dragonfly in Manifold Ditch East and 2 Four-spotted Chaser on the Little Mead pools.

11th June - 2 Little Ringed Plover, 1 pair Bullfinch

6th June - 4 Hairy Dragonfly in Manifold Ditch East and 1 in Little Mead pools, 1 Small Copper, 3 foot Hawthorn on King's Mead totally defoliated by the Hawthorn Moth ( see the new Moth Page)


4th June - Male Teal, 1 Garden Warbler

31st May - 1 Little Ringed Plover, 1 Cuckoo, 1 Stock Dove, and 1 Small Copper

23rd May - 3 Hairy Dragonfly in Manifold Ditch west of flyover, 1 Little Ringed Plover, 1 Lesser Whitethroat and 1 Garden Warbler

21st May - 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker

16th May - 1 Willow Warbler, 1 Lesser Whitethroat, 2 Garden Warbler, 4 Shelduck, Cuckoo, 2 Stock Dove. This the first Willow Warbler record since April 2002. Also, a large new colony (7sq metres) of Water Violet along the King's Mead/Hollow Mead fence.

15th May - 1 WHITE STORK circled being mobbed by a corvid between 6.00 - 6.30 pm, before drifting off towards Ware

8th May - 1 Stock Dove

7th May - Water Violet in flower in Manifold Ditch

8th April - Lady's Smock in flower on King's Mead, first 3 Swallow, 1 Green Woodpecker, 40 Meadow Pipit on Park Mead, 1 Stock Dove

2nd April - 7 Water Vole in Hertford Cut from flyover to Tansy Mead, 1 Water Rail in Hertford Cut by flyover, 1 female Great Spotted Woodpecker

28th March - 1 Water Vole in Hertford Cut by flyover, 1 Water Rail by railway crossing by White House Sluice, first 2 Chiffchaff
