South Georgia

Passport Stamp

Here are a few pictures I have taken of a really remarkable part of the World that not many people have had a chance to visit. I have been fortunate to have visited this area twice during my Naval Career first in 1984 then again in 1990. It remains a truly beautiful un-spoilt area.

Grytviken Whaling Station (Disused)

Stomness

Fur Seal, Stromness

King Penguins, Grytviken

Elephant Seal, Grytviken

It was the invasion of these Islands in April 1982, by the Argentineans that have brought them to the public's attention. The Whaling Stations have long since been abandoned but walking around these old ghost towns one can visualize what life must have been like in this barren inhospitable area. The weather can change very abruptly from sunshine as in most of these pictures to freezing winds and snow, making it a very dangerous environment to live and work. The people who worked here must have had to endure many hazards.
