"The Portland Show"
mini-review:  jude @ the aladdin - may 7, 2002 (portland, oregon)

(this review was originally posted to the jude discuss list on may 8, 2002)

Hey Everyone!!!!

It feels so  good to be sitting here in front of my computer again!!! And it's
delightful reading through all your e-mails from the past week!!!

So I just got home from Portland, where I saw Jude perform at The Aladdin
last night. Can I just say...and I mean no disrespect to my fellow L.A.
fans...but the Portland crowd was absolutely the best crowd I've seen in all
the many performances I've seen of Jude's!!! Oregonians (?)...you are amazing!

So...I didn't record the show last night...so there won't be any sort of in
depth review or anything...but I'll post some highlights of stuff I remember.
I guess first I'll list the songs I remember him playing:

He opened with "Cuba," then "I'm Sorry Now." Everything else is a blur, but
here goes: ""Prophet," "Isn't It Over," "Brad And Suzy," "Rick James," "I
Know," "Your Eyes," "Dance Floor," "Everything's All Right," "I Will Not
Die," "You Mama You," "Out Of LA," "George," "In Between." Those were not in
order. During "Dance Floor," a guy came up to the dance floor and busted out
with some Michael Jackson moves and back-flips....it was pretty entertaining.

His encore, which was greeted with a STANDING OVATION (go portland!!) was "I
Do." And then, after leaving the stage, he was brought back out AGAIN to
perform two more songs. "Indian Lover" and "Gay Cowboy."

So on a couple of personal notes...I attended the concert with my cousin
Cheryl and her boyfriend Cam, who incidently got married by Jude last night.

Let me explain :-)

Early in the show, a girl in the audience screamed out and asked Jude if he
did weddings, which was greeted by playful groans from the audience. Jude
played along however, asking her if she wanted to get married now...because
at this show, he was like the captain of a ship and could perform the
marriage if she wanted. This was greeted by silence by the girl.

So then later, after the show while we were waiting for the first encore, my
cousin Cheryl asked me if she should yell out about whether it was too late
for him to marry her and her boyfriend (yes, she stole that first girl's
thunder!) So I encouraged her to, knowing that something funny would
happen. So he came out for his encore and sang "I Do," which would make her
yelling out for the wedding even more classic in my book! But then he left
the stage before she got a chance. But then he did come back out, and she
asked him if he would perform her "wedding." And after joking about her
boyfriend elbowing her to shut up, he invited them up on stage to perform the
ceremony.

Someone in the audience yelled out if they were legal (they're both rather
young...18 and 19) and my cousin jokingly lied and said she was 32...and Jude
was like, "is that your ages combined?" So he was like "I'm not gonna marry
you, I'm just gonna give you some advice....(laughs)....no, I'm gonna marry
you." So he asked Cam if he took Cheryl as his wife, and Cam was like
"Sure...I mean, I do." And then it was Cheryl's turn...and then he
pronounced them man and wife. As they left the stage, Jude gave Cheryl a
small kiss (on the lips!) , and then Cam went in to kiss him too, and Jude began
to, then they both backed away.

After that, Jude sang "Indian Lover."

Then, after the audience screamed for a few more songs, Jude was like, "I'm
gonna play this next song for Rychard cuz I know he came a long way to be
here tonight!"

So yeah...I got a Jude shout-out on stage :)

After the show, Jude came up off the stage and greeted his fans...my cousin
Cheryl was like "Hi Jude...you married me, remember??" And she introduced me
as her cousin, which was cool, so Jude was like "Hey Rychard." And I was all
embarrassed cuz I didn't want him thinking I was weird stalker guy...you
know? So as we were leaving he was like "Drive safe, Rychard....or are you
flying." I was flying. So he's like "Oh yeah, what time?" I give him the
time, airline, and flight number...lol. And he's like "well, maybe I'll see
you at the airport!"

We had like this whole personal exchange...I mean, not like "personal," but
you know...it was a little beyond "good show, Jude," which is my normal
conversation!

But anyway...all in all...fantastic show. I had a really great time at the
Aladdin, which I heard was sold-out, (is that true?) so Jude had no need to
worry about the crowd! Oh yeah...I wanna give my own little shout out to
Leslie...it was fantastic meeting you...!!!!!!

Anyway, I'm sure I've left out a slew of details...but that's how it goes
sometimes!!

It's good to be home!
